When you click on a particular type of file, it would be nice if it automatically opened in the program you want it to. Unfortunately this often isn't the case, especially if you have installed a new program which has taken over your file associations, sometimes without asking. Image files are particularly prone to this. Here is how you can get things back to how you want them. Find one of the files of the type you want to change (such as Bmp), select it by left clicking on it once. When the file is highlighted, hold down the Shift key and right click on it. (With XP, you can just right click on the file, no need for the Shift key) When the menu appears, select "Open With" from the list and a dialogue box will pop up. From the list in the box, select the program you want to use to open that file type, in our example I have chosen Mspaint. Click on the small box next to "Always use this program to open this type of file" then click OK. If you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, just repeat the process and choose a different program. Open With Dialogue Box:
If you are not sure about which program to use for a particular file type, I can recommend this website, which lists virtually every file extension and their related programs; http://www.filext.com/ |
