Hi folks,
I've tried three or four different times to download AVG and keep getting the page not found 404 message. Anyone know why that might be?
Trying to get rid of McAfee on my daughter's new pc, but can't till I get something else downloaded.
I downloaded 25 critical updates for Windows XP and IE and installed BOClean on it, but want to get AVG asap and get rid of McAfee.
Thanks for any advice.
BTW, so far not impressed with XP.

>>BTW, so far not impressed with XP. << LOL, why did I expect that to come? :)
I tried to download as well, and got the same error. If you don't want to wait, I can go upstairs and check and see if I still have my last download--then you can just run the updater.

Thanks Mike,
Which one should I download?

LOL, got me!
I would venture to guess the higher the digits the more recent the version...but don't know for certain. :hammer:

Mike,
I'm going to wait till Bruce sees this, he will know, I feel sure.
The difference in files sizes has me puzzled, maybe the October file is some kind of update to the app itself?
Thanks for your help. :thRt:

Definately wait. I was hoping you would know which was which. :)

Leroi, let me see what I can find. Several months back they made a Prg Update that allows smaller Virus Update Defs, so Dialup can get them faster.
I will see what I can find and let you know.

Thanks Bruce,
Will do. :)

Told you I would be right back, LOL.
I just used
www.grisoft.com
and it came right up, Free Version is 6.615 D/L and then activate it and get the latest Defs. Usually the latest Defs are already installed before the D/L is Released.
HTH.

Still getting an error, but it has changed, instead of the 404 message, I'm getting the "not on this server" message. I'll try later.
Thanks Bruce. :thRt:

Have you cleared all Cookies and Internet Files both online and Off line?
Reboot before doing it to be sure the Updates you already did within Windows are installed properly first.
Once rebooted go to IE and Options and clean out History, Online and Off Line Content.
Then try to access again.

I don't want to steal the thread, but am curious as to what you were expecting from xp. Are you unimpressed by the speed, the look, the stability, the IE? :)

I just went there again and this is a screen shot,
I have to shutdown and reboot now, will be right back.

I'll try that Bruce.

It isn't as quick feeling as my modified ME and the boot>restart times are slow as the dickens, but I haven't fiddled with services yet, possible it will start to impress me more. The cpu is 2.2GHZ Celeron as opposed to my 1.1GHZ Athlon T-Bird so I guess I expected more quickness. It has integrated graphics and the clarity isn't as good as my monitor, but my daughter is happy and it will serve her purposes well, it does get a better connection speed than my pctel modem though, maybe I need to update the driver for mine? It only has 256MB RAM as opposed to my 512MB, but it is DDR as opposed to my SDRAM. It has a pretty interface, hard to navigate for me though.

I get that page, all the way to the download after giving my info but the download itself gives me the not found message.

I still get this:

I would go with the last one which is the exact download minus 1--instead of 6524 it is 6523. Then run the update. I am willing to bet fu is short for full and the numbers are corresponding to the update.
But, then again, I'm just guessing! :)

Ok, just got rebooted, after having to turn off the Power Strip.
Let me see what I find Now.
Be right Back.

Ok, I tried using Juno and got the 404 Error. I loaded IE and tried again and no Problem. In the left Panel select Free Version, bottom of the List. and D/L Now.
HTH.

I couldn't get the newest free version either... I did download the 6523 build and ran the update program.... Ended up with the 6524 build after updates :) I'd try that :)

Thanks Golfpro,
I will give that a try in the morning, my daughter has gone to bed and I don't want to disturb her tonight. I'm still running Norton 2001 on my own pc, just keep buying new subscriptions, but may have to do something different next year.
I feel sure getting rid of McAfee will improve performance on the new pc, sure helped mine when I got rid of the OEM version that came with it and installed Norton. I have heard bad things about the new version of Norton though and don't think I want to try it, can't afford to right now anyway.

Only thing "bad" about Norton 2k4 is the Product Activation (which doesn't bother me anyway)... From what I've heard, the performance of 2k4 is better than 2k3, but people are upset about the product activation.
I'm still torn as to what to do for an AV on my machine. My AVG subscription just ran out (actually paid for it), but don't know that I want to go back and I think I can find better. Trying out Panda AV, but not impressed with the setup. I like lots of customization, and Panda won't give it to me. May have to go buy Norton myself.

I couldn't remember what I had read and that's it, the DRM and you're right, that doesn't bother me either. I may have to go out and get it when I can afford to, but that will be a while.
I'm a pretty big fan of Norton actually. The utilities are just great, imo. Couldn't do without my NSW 2001, sure improves performance. Windoctor is a wonderful tool, although imperfect, as is all software.
