A reservoir is, most broadly, a place or hollow vessel where something (usually liquid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid)) is kept in reserve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reserve), for later use. Most often, a reservoir refers to an artificial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial) lake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake), used to store water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water) for various uses. Reservoirs are created first by building a sturdy dam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dam), usually out of cement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cement), earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil), rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_%28geology%29), or a mixture. Once the dam is completed, a stream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stream) is allowed to flow behind it and eventually fill it to capacity. Reservoirs exist in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and can be either natural or man-made.:hi:

The Junghua Dam is located in the Shihmen Reservoir upstream catchment area, 27 kilometers above the Shihmen Dam. In a precipitous Tahan River gorge, it is a major component of the greater Shihmen Reservoir water collection plan, as it is able to stop sand, gravel and rock from moving downstream, there to load the Shihmen Dam with a silting burden.

Work on the dam was begun in December 1978 and completed in June 1984. The project took five-and-a-half years and NT$1.83 billion to complete.

Aside from its main function, that of blocking sand from moving downstream and accumulating as silt in the reservoir, it also claims a high enough water head that a hydroelectric plant has been sited at Yihsing, six kilometers downstream. The plant has an annual output capacity of 200 million units.
