For this tut, I'll be using Paint Shop Pro and Animation Shop. My version is PSP7, but this can be incorporated using other versions as well! We are going to make this jack-o-lantern appear to have a flickering candle inside!

Here is the image that I will be using. Please feel free to use mine by right clicking and saving to your computer or use one of your own.

Open up PSP and then click "file" and then "open", find your image and click "open". Also open up your Animation Shop program. With your image open in PSP, right click and choose "copy" and then go to AS and right click and choose "paste as new animation".

Go back to PSP and click on the "magic wand" tool and hold down your shift key and click on all the places that you want to put the glow effect. The settings I used are shown below.

Now go up to "colors"/"adjust"/brightness/contrast" and use the settings below.

Right click within the image to get rid of the selected areas. Now click on your arrow, next to your zoom feature - "not" the undo arrow. Right click on your image and choose "copy" and now go to Animation Shop and right click on your original image and choose "paste after current frame".

Now click on "view"/"animation" to see what the animation looks like. If you like it, go up to "file"/"save as" and save it to your computer.

I like mine a little slower, so in order to do this, I click the red x to get rid of the animated image and now we're back to the animation that we're putting together. Now go up to "edit"/"select all" and then up to "animation"/"frame properties" and when the box comes up, I backspace out the 10 and put in a 12. Click "okay" and now go back to "view"/"animation" and see if you like that better.

Here is my finished image -

The possibilities are endless with making things glow! You can make lanterns or candles flicker or how about street lights or lights in houses . . . anything you choose!

*A little added tip when saving your images. You will find that some images save great just by going up to "file"/"save as", however, some images don't keep their clarity. I found this to be true with the pumpkin image that I used for this tutorial. When this happens and you're ready to save your image, go to "file"/"optimization wizard" and click through the prompts. When it is finished, then go up to "file"/"save as" and save your image the regular way and you'll see a noticeable difference!
