The "restart " is not working. I can remember a couple of days ago that some how I was in safe mode, don't know how that happened, But I think there was something about starting in safe mode. I didn't follow through and just rebooted. Is my restart stuck in safe mode? Is this possible ? If so , how do I go back to the normal restart?

So are you saying that every time you boot your computer now it goes straight into Safe Mode, without asking you. Does it actually say Safe Mode in the corners of your Desktop.

If you click Start > Shut Down on the menu that comes up, do you have the option of Restart in MS-DOS mode, if so the quickest way out of this might be to restore the registry back to when it was booting normally.

Amie, no it does not go into safe mode( only saw it the one time ). It just wont restart in the normal restart option.

Okay

Let me try again to understand what is or is not happening.
When you turn your computer on in the morning, does it boot normally, but the problem is when you go to Start > Shut Down > and select, Restart that nothing happens, or what does happen if something does.

This is the bit that has me puzzled

"Is my restart stuck in safe mode? " Where does Safe Mode come into this.

I know it is difficult to explain, but could you have another bash, and hopefully between us we can figure out what the exact problem is and therefore the solution.

My computer turns on OK. When I go to Start > Shut Down > Restart. I select restart and the Microsoft Window comes up saying Windows is shutting down but nothing happens.

I only mentioned safe mode because one day while I was typing I think a slip of the fingers, a blue screen(I believe) came up with something about safe mode. I panicked and rebooted. I don't know if that's the reason I have the problem with restart, Just a thought.

I think your best bet is to restore the registry, and don't worry it is not as scary as it sounds, just follow these steps:

Click Start > Shut Down > Restart in MS-DOS.

When your computer restarts, at the prompt > type

scanreg /restore

Then press the Enter key

Using the arrow keys on your keyboard highlight an entry with a date previous to your problem, which has the word Started against it. Then press Enter.

When you receive notification that you have restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer, into windows.

Amie I followed your instructions but still not working. Do you think if I re-install W98 it would work. If yes, do I un-install first or just install over it?

>>My computer turns on OK. When I go to Start > Shut Down > Restart. I select restart and the Microsoft Window comes up saying Windows is shutting down but nothing happens.<<

If you choose shut down, does the computer shut down?

Do you have fast shutdown enabled in msconfig? If so you might try unchecking that option (click apply and okay) to see if it helps.

I think reinstalling Windows is over-kill at this point, last resort type of thing.

Did you install any programs immediately before this problem started?

[added]

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and see what programs are running, you could even try ending the tasks of processes one by one and try to restart each time to see if one of them might be causing the problem, just don't end the task of either systray or explorer.

"If you choose shut down, does the computer shut down"?
Yes

"Do you have fast shutdown enabled in msconfig? If so you might try unchecking that option (click apply and okay) to see if it helps."
I don't see anything about "Fast Shutdown"

"Did you install any programs immediately before this problem started"?
No

Did you try running SFC, System File Checker?

Lady

So you did a registry restore back to before this problem started and received the message that you had restored a properly working registry, but you still can't restart.

This might sound totally unconnected, but try doing a repair of Internet Explorer, go to your Control Panel > Add\Remove programs scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer, click on the entry to highlight it, then click the Add\Remove button, you will be given 3 options one of which will be Repair.

If it comes down to it that you want to reinstall windows, then just install over the top of what you have got now, you can't uninstall windows first without refornatting your hard drive, which would mean losing everything on it. Doing what is known as a dirty install should mean that you do not lose any of your programs or settings, (I have never lost anything this way) but I would still recommend backing up any important information first, such as your documents, favourites and emails etc.

Did you try running SFC, System File Checker?

Amie did the repair. When it asked if I wanted to restart, I clicked yes. Same thing, Windows is shutting down. Did not restart.

Bruce I did not do this unless it's the same as"scanreg /restore"
"Did you try running SFC, System File Checker"?

What is my next option?

Bruce

System File Checker is not the same as restore.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information Then at the Top Click on the Tools to get the dropdown menu and select System File Checker. Have your Windows CD handy.

You can also access System File Checker by going to Start > Run and typing SFC in the box , then click OK.

Here is a MSKB article about a Window 98 SE Supplement patch for Shut down problems.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;239887 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;239887)

Have you had the problem more than 5 days?

ladyLuck

Not sure about the five days. I was in the middle of checking files and I got stuck here.

This file may be corrupt
File capi2032dll
location C:\windows\system

Restore from D:\WIN98~1\WIN98\
Save files in C:\Windows System
When I click OK this is what I get

File was not found. Verify that you have selected the correct "Restore" from location and try again
I don't know what to do with it
I'm only half way through checking

I tried to do a screen shot but it didn't work

Lady

When this comes up in SFC

Restore from D:\WIN98~1\WIN98\
Save files in C:\Windows\System

and you click OK, do you have your windows CD in your Cd drive and is that your D: drive. because that is where SFC is looking for the file.

That is a modem driver and may not be on the Windows 98 SE install Disk or you may need to point to the Driver folder on the install Disk to find it.

Amie , no I did not have the CD in

I don't think the modem is the problem. A different modem was installed some time ago . It must be something else that is causing the restart not to work. I'm not that well versed on computers but

Would I be Ok If I just re-install W98 over the set up that's in there now?. Do you think that will fix it.

Amie

I can't say for certain that doing a dirty install of windows will fix the problem, but in the 4 years I have had my computer, I have only had to do it once, and that fixed my problem, and I lost nothing in the process.

Do you have your important files backed up, just in case.

The modem may not still be installed but the driver may still be getting loaded.

Did you review the MSKB article I posted above?

Do I need a program or disk to do this?

Lady

Here is a good article on how and what to back up:

Back It Up (http://www.worldstart.com/tips/file-management/backup.htm)

I don't actually think it is that necessary, if you are just installing windows on top of itself, but better to be safe than sorry, you would not like to lose important documents, emails or your address book if anything did go wrong.

It really is a good idea to make a habit of regularly backing up your personal files, just in case your drive ever fails etc;

Thank you all for your time and patience with me.
I will save what I feel is important. If I ever get "restart" to work I'll let you know. :)
