Hi everyone.
I posted this elsewhere and Amie very kindly sugested a possible solution, which unfortunately hasn't worked. I've just seen Bobs posting re restoring reg in Win 98se and will pass that on word for word, (by telephone 300 miles)
My friend has the problem that he cannot boot up, it stops at the Password thingy with an error message saying:-" MPR,EXE. this programm has performed an ilegal operation and will close," it closes down.
He can restart in DOS but neither he nor I know anything about and we are stuck. hopefully Bobs posting will help, its very slightely different to Aimies sugestion.
Thanks all.
Fred
Is there some more information in this error message that you can provide us with, eg does it say what program has caused the error, or what Mpr.exe has caused an error in.
Has your friend tried this:
He Hopefully should be able to start in Safe Mode to carry out the instructions.
When you log on to Windows, or after you install Windows, you may receive the following error message, and your computer may stop responding (hang):
MPREXE not responding
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your password list (.pwl) file is damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods. After each method, test to see if the issue is resolved. If the issue continues to occur, use the next method.
Damaged Password List File
To re-create your password list file, use the following steps.
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
In the Named box, type *.pwl, and then click Find Now.
Right-click the Username.pwl file, and then click Rename, where Username is the name you use to log on to Windows.
Rename the Username.pwl file to Username.old, and then press ENTER.
Restart Windows.
When your computer restarts, you are prompted for a user name and password. If you want, you can choose to create a null password. If you create a null password, you are no longer prompted to log on when Windows starts. To create a null password, leave the password box blank, click OK, and then click OK to confirm the password.
P.S RB and I wrote that article on Restoring the registry as a joint effort, and even though it is a slightly different method to the one I gave you, you will get exactly the same result.

Thanks Amie,
This is very difficult if not impossible I think, too much passing of information from him/me/you. lol.
I have sugested that he wheels it down to the local PC shop where they will have all the correct spanners/ hammer/chisels etc. but that would have to be Monday, you know what its like with no PC.
Fred
Your friend can try deleting the password file from DOS;
Type the following commands hitting enter at the end of each one
deltree c:\windows\default.pwl
deltree c:\windows\username.pwl
Please substitute the actual name your friend uses to log in with, for username in the above command.
Then type
Exit
To reboot into windows.

If that don't work try this
At the DOS prompt, go to the Windows directory by typing "cd\windows" (without the quotes). Delete .pwl files by typing "del *.pwl" (again, without the quotes) at the command line. No password will be required on the next boot.
A new password can be set, if you wish, by clicking My Computer > Control Panel > Passwords, then click Change Windows Password.
