Changing file types

I'm sure if I knew the terminology to use, I could find and retain this. A friend sent some pictures (via AOL if that matters) that I can't seem to change to jpg. Currently they save as that gobbledygook with all the letters and numbers. What do I need to do?

In case anyone else needs help with this, the problem was the way AOL sends attachments. I forwarded the email to another account (Yahoo) and was able to save as jpgs. Bruce helped me figure this out over AIM.
