Does the old version need to be uninstalled or can this be installed over it?
If it needs to be uninstalled, can the plug-ins be saved or do they have to be downloaded again?

I always uninstall the existing version before installing the latest, only takes a few minutes. Also the plugins are sometimes associated with a particular version so its best to download the latest version of program and its associated plugins.

You can install the new version over the old but it will leave the old shortcuts in Start\Programs\Irfanview. I agree with John, it is much better to uninstall the old version and download the plugin and reinstall them.

Me and another person ran in to a problem with the new Irfanview 3.85. After much time spent playing around with it my old brain finally clicked in and found the problem.

When I would try to use the "Insert Text" feature after designating a box the language would come out as jibberish. Finally went into the "Font" setting on the Insert Text feature and found it set on Symbol-System. Changed it to Arial and everything worked fine. The other person tried the same thing and bingo. The new download must come that way.

I downloaded and installed the latest version and right away it worked without a hitch, the text was ok.
