View Full Version : Shut Down & Restart Not Working :(

Hi,
I seem to have a new problem every week now, maybe it's time for a new PC?
Anyway this weeks dilemma, when I shut down or restart my desktop icons clear, my task bar disapears but then nothing?..all thats left is my blank desktop with my wallpaper.
If I then CTRL,ALT,DEL and select Shut Down, it does so right away with no problem at all.
It's just not doing it by itself?
I'm running window ME by the way.
Thanks again!

Hi,
Windows ME can be problematic about shutting down, from what I have read, although my WinME machine does so without incident.
Do you have a sound file assigned to "exit windows" in the sounds and multimedia applet of the control panel? If not, assign one, if so, change it, it may be corrupt.
Did you add any software or make any changes immediately before this problem started occurring? If so, there may be a background process that is not shutting down properly and causing Windows to hang on shutdown.
I have read about many people using a program called Enditall to end tasks of most everything before shutdown, but this seems like a band-aid remedy to me.
You could download Process Explorer to help isolate any processes (not shown in the task manager, C+A+D) that may be causing problems.
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware...e/procexp.shtml (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml)
(only use it to view background processes, it may have much more powerful functions that I have not used and could be hazardous if used improperly)
Do you have your antivirus program configured to scan floppies on shutdown? This can cause shutdown hangs.

Hi,
Took a few days to get back with this, LeRoi brought up something that needed fixing. My sounds, all of my sounds had been erased, I think I know why this was, I had a virus of some kind a while back and I had loads of crap in my MEDIA folder and I erased the lot, including my sounds unaware I was doing so! Anyway I've recovered all my sounds.
This however is not the problem affecting my shutdown.
Any ideas folks, when I shut down or restart all my icons go as well as my taskbar leaving just my desktop, but then nothing....it just sits there. If I CTRL,ALT,DEL and press shut down it shuts down with no problem.

Hi Gromit,
Do you know what kind of virus you had a while back? It could possibly still be giving you trouble.
Did you try assigning a sound to "exit Windows"?

Right!! a busy day or two has been spent meddling with my PC. I had still got viruses. I had the W32.PINFI virus and some Trojans etc. I'm almost embarrassed to say that despite spending hours on the web most days I had little in the way of antivirus running on my PC. This is now sorted and Norton is running. It detected around 1800 files infected and they are now all clean.
I have however come to the conclusion that my problem may be "MSGSRV32" this kinda fills me with dread because I've searched on the web and it all sounds pretty grim. Most of the solutions and causes I've seen don't seem to relate to me.
I've noticed that when I boot up, if I click START sometimes, and more and more often these days, it presses then holds for anywhere up to a minute, maybe longer before it displays the menu. Also some tasks are pausing, and when I press CTRL,ALT,DEL it says that MSGSRV32 is not responding. I've read on the Microsoft pages that this can cause a pause on shutdown too.
So I think this is where I need to go now. However I have no idea what to do to fix this. As I said everything I've looked at on the web seems alien and doesn't seem to apply to me.
Heeeeeeelp!!

Neil I hate to say this but if I had that many files infected by a virus I would do a format and clean install. I am afraid you are going to be constantly fighting problems with your operating system and PC.

I think in the long term theres a chance you could be right ranger bob, but in the short term I think a complete format and install is the last option I'd like to take.
I have a 40GB hard disk and only 2GB free so I do have an awful lot of stuff I'd have to back up!
Now back to MSGSRV32 from what I've read it's not usually the MSGSRV32 causes the problem it's usually another program. Now I'm reasonably sure that the problem may lie in Outlook Express because it's when I launch that I get this problem. Outlook at the moment is having problems, when it runs it opens quickly as it should but takes longer to display the emails and menu bar than it should. If I open OE first and then IE I usually find that IE freezes, but if I load IE first and on it's own it runs fine.
What I've done now is backed up my mailbox (dbx) files and my favorites folder and I want to uninstall/reinstall IE and OE again. However I've just checked and neither are listed in my ADD/REMOVE list?....is this VERY unusual?...I've never known it before. There is however a IE Update file in there, I tried to delete that and it couldn't.
Another thing, I uninstalled MSN Messenger a few days ago because I was having problems. MSN has never run properly since I downloaded the latest version. Previously it loaded as a tray icon on start up and as soon as I went online it signed in. However when I installed the latest version, it no longer loaded as a tray icon, it only loaded when I opened OE and it seemed quite erratic the tray icon (little green/red man) would load then disapear, reappear, disappear, it never seemed like it was stable.
From what I can see my PC is working fine in every other way except for this MSGSRV32 NOT RESPONDING fault which as I say seems to only occur when I open OE.
So I guess the first question I ask is how do I erase OE and IE if not from the add remove menu?
Also has anyone else any experience with this MSGSRV?
Cheers as ever!
Neil
PS. I've gone to MSCONFIG and unticked the load start up group items and my PC shuts down and restarts as normal!!

Oops!...sorry both IE and OE were in the ADD REMOVE menu!, forgot they were prefixed by MICROSOFT. However it wont actually let me uninstall IE6?

Will it let you let you Repair them? If not here is a link to the complete install of the various versions of IE so you install over your existing version. You would need to do your updates again but it might fix your problem.

RB,
They no longer have the complete installers at the link you provided, why I do not know.
Here is a link that has some IE versions:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
I do not see IE6 SP1 there however. They do have IE6.

Hi,
Here's what I have done...
Used IE Eradicator to supposedly get rid of EVERYTHING to do with IE & OE however despite uninstalling it etc, I still had the IE icon on my desktop and it didn't delete my favorites folder like it said it would?!?! Then reinstalled IE6 SP1
Reinstalled MSN Messenger, thats fine it was just me being an arse and not reading the options through properly.
I also used Second Chance which I have installed here and went back to the earliest checkpoint 25th August. And should have put my system files back to the way they were. I then did a full norton antivirus scan to check it didn't put any files back that had the virus. The scan came up clean not a single infection.
Since all that I have yet to see the MSGSRV32 message but OE did seem a little slow still so I don't think I've seen the back of that. As for the restart and shutdown problems, well we've seen some improvement, it has shutdown and restarted without CTRL,ALT,DEL having to be called in, I've probably restarted about 7 times this evening, to try it, and with the installs and uninstalls and it's been pretty good but has paused once or twice. It is noticeable that when I disable the start up items it runs perfect and the pause only happens when they're active.
When it does pause after a short while I get a dialog box with the END TASK WAIT commands, but the program is not listed, it doesn't say which program it is thats bringing this dialog box up and presumably causing the pause in shutdown?

I've just ran HIJACK THIS, this is the log report can anyone see anything weird? As I've said before my PC seems to run OK when the start up groups are disabled. I'm thinking that something in there may be the cause!
