Great link, Catherine, I am new to XP, thank you...
I have been doing things the hard way;
it's nice to read about the way I should have done it. :)

And now I can fix some of the things
the way they were supposed to be
before I had some fun with them

This is my first computer and I'm learning "how to" do everything as well.

I have a little bit of experience with computers...
sort of.

I have written many small programs but when it comes to actually "using" the computer...
I am a nerd.

I am new to XP, but instead of reading the manual, the first thing I did was start tweaking the registry... :cjlol:

I can't help it... it's the way I am. Somehow it worked out that I have almost a minor in CS. Well, I actually have 32 hours. But it is spread out in weird ways, so I need 2 more hours. jeez. Enough about me... Welcome to the forum!

Here is a minor irritation in windows explorer XP that you might want to get rid of... If you have a notepad replacement that you are fond of using... but some stubborn programs insist on using the old notepad for displaying text ...
windows file protection will sometimes prevent modifications... so

I can send a little batch file that will replace windows' notepad.exe with what you prefer. And if you find any neat stuff let me know, too, please?

Thank you but so far I haven't encountered any problems with the old notepad although I seldom use it. I did get a freebie notepad you might be interested in ... called NoteTab Light. If I really want to go to town editing in a notepad, this is a great tool! http://www.mypcclinic.com/forums/images/smilies/Doublethumbs.gif

Cool. Yep, I've heard that is a good one. I use one that is good for lots of boring code called Notepad++ and a simple one good for quick text called metapad.

I'm still trying to clean up all the junk software and offers that came with my notebook. It's hard to tell whether to blame me or toshiba for some of my mess

This is great!

The customize file filters is an extension I can't live without, because I build my own files types and file formats for storing my code snippets... I have been trying one after another notepad replacements but never anything as convenient as metapd's registry edits to build filters.

Thanks, RB.
