Has anybody else noticed when you click to start your AVG to check for updates, that there is a notice that you can update to protect against spyware, hackers and spam? And . . . did you do it? :)

I already have Superantispyware, adaware and I did have Spybot (but, I can't find it!) Do you think that the AVG one is something that would check automatically or be something that you would have to run like the others? :)

Linda,

Take a look at this page. It says it has an automatic cleaning engine but it doesn't have auto-updating.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/us/frt/0

This is the website for AVG and you can check out all of their programs here.

Never have I seen that notice. I have mine set for automatic and do go manually and see if there are any.

I have mine set for automatic too, but try to check it each time I turn on the computer and before I go to any sites. Here's what I've been seeing the last few days . . .

MrBill,

Why?? If you click on the control center this is what you should see. This is the automated message that is popping up.

I don't see the message about Attention, Upgrade now, etc.

The AVG is working fine. For some reason, I'm getting that little advertisement about upgrading to the spyware, firewall, etc. (which of course is a pay thing and I don't need it as I use the other ones).

When did this start. I wonder if you downloaded the wrong one.

I've had this AVG for quite some time. The ad  just appeared a few days ago.

Like Linda, this has been on my wife's laptop for sometime and yes, the advertisement is there. That was one of the main reasons I stopped using Opera a long time ago was because of their ads. But, they give it to you for free so I agree that they have that right.

I checked 20 different PC's today and not a one of them have that on there. I asked them to go and do an update manually and still nothing.

Program Version: 7.5.488
Virus Base: 269.13.30/1029

Well, I can only check 2, my wife's laptop and my XP desktop. My desktop has AVG Free Edition, Program version: 7.5.488 Virus base: 269.13.30/1029 Release date: 24 Sep 07 7:09 pm.

I have been doing some searching on the grisoft site and found a link that might answer the question.

http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/read.php?8,107366#msg-107386

OK, Ive located some info on your image. It's part of a Grisoft monitored sales campaign testing out advertising directed @ a certain number of users in the USA so there is nothing for you to worry about.

This was quote from far down the thread and explains why some see it and some don't.

But, Mr. Bill . . . then I wouldn't be special anymore!

Actually, I'm curious to see how long they will leave it on before they decide that it didn't work. :)

I never see the ad because I don't open the control panel. I put it on, set it up, let it run in the background and do the auto updates. I didn't even know the ads were there till this thread started. Very passive approach to advertising.

John, I used to do mine like that too only I discovered that AVG doesn't automatically update the minute that I log on. So, to make sure that I'm instantly updated and before I go surfing - I open it up and let it check for updates. Then at other times when I'm surfing, it might do an automatic one. It's probably just a silly thing, but I just don't want to take the chance of missing one before the automatic update decides to give it to me.

Never had a problem with the auto updates. I keep my XP in sleep mode and as soon as I awake it, AVG pops up and updates. Same for my wife's laptop. Are you sure you have everything set correctly?

Linda,
Double click on it by the clock and in the window that opens up, click on Scheduler then on the bottom of that screen click on Scheduled Tasks and see what time it is set for. Make sure that the update is set at a time before a scan is scheduled. That way you will have the latest updates before it scans.

Mr. Bill, it says that it is set for between 2-3 pm. The scanning starts at 8a.m. Do I need to change something? :)

MrBill

That is fine. As long as it updates before it scans. If you will look closely, it will tell you exactly what time it checks for updates. Mine is at 10:41 PM and doesn't miss a beat. I leave my PC on 7/24 unless I am going to be gone for more then 24 hours. I even ran mine off my Generator when we lost electricity from 2 different hurricanes. When it is doing its scan thing, it will slow the PC down. Mine scans at 5:00 AM while I am sleeping. I delete all my scans about once a month. I check the Virus Vault at the same time and if there is something in there, I delete it at the same time. I can't remember when the last time I had something in my vault.

I'm thinking that it is scanning before it updates. The scan starts at 8a.m., but the update thing is set for 2-3 pm. I probably need to change something, but I don't see where you can change the scanning thing.

MrBill
09-27-2007, 11:21 PM
You change it the same place that you looked at to see what time it does what. Just click on the one that you want to change and on the bottom of that window, click on Edit Schedule and do it. It is scanning about 5 or 6 hours after an update according to what you posted.

I'm confused, can you tell? :cjlol:

I don't know what the thing is, but there is an automatic scan that starts at 8 in the mornings. But the scheduler thing you had me check - is that for the updates? If it is, it is updating 6-7 hours "after" the scan has run that morning. I better go to bed . . . my mind has already gone to sleep! I'll check back in the morning! Goodnight, Mr. Bill and thanks!!

MrBill

You can change BOTH schedules in the same place. Make the update one first then the scan one. Do the scan one right after the update one.

Okay, I changed the update to be between 8 and 9:59 in the mornings. Then the scan to run at 11 in the morning.

If you will drag that screen to full size, it will show you exactly what time it does the update.
Mine is between 10:00 and 11:59 PM and it goes at 10:41 PM.

Good morning! :hi:

I still don't see though how this helps you to get an update sooner than just clicking for one. Unless I'm missing something here (and I probably am) it seems that you are surfing waiting for the automatic update to kick in at a time that you have scheduled it. Whereas if you click to check for an update before you surf, then aren't you getting it quicker? :hat:

Linda,

Try scheduling your update at a time before the scan by about 30 minutes and then schedule both to start early before you get up. If you have broadband (always on) and your leave your computer on, it will happen while you sleep or when you first turn your computer on.

Nobody said it did. That is a scheduled update. The only way to get one sooner is to do it manually. You can do it manually 100 times a day if you want.

John, I shut my computer down at night and let it rest!

Okay, Mr. Bill - I think I understand it now. :)

BTW, when I was poking around in there, I saw a place of "where" to let it scan and there were 2 options. Something about "all" or "files and folders that could be infected" or something like that. Which one do you have checked?

MrBill
09-28-2007, 11:47 AM
Scan System Areas before the test starts is what is default. If anything comes in, it will catch it. I have NEVER had the scan find anything. It gets caught when it comes in and moved to the vault or whatever I choose for it to do. I usually don't let it heal it so that I can see it. Just move it to the vault and forget it. You could also check your HD if you wanted but I think that it is done automatically.

Yes. It comes pretty well defaulted the way it should be. I have never changed anything and have never been infected on any of the over 100 PC's that I have installed it on.
