I've had Spybot S&D for many years & have been perfectly happy with it till just recently when I made some changes recommended by another forum member for someone else. Well, I started a scan at about 4am this morning & went to bed knowing it'd be done in an hour or less. WRONG!
It didn't stop scanning for another 8 some hours.
I un did the changes & ran a scan to check it out but had to stop it because it was just a 1/4 way done.
What can I download to replace Spybot that will NOT cause problems with my other programs which are,
AVG anti spyware 7.5,
AVG Anti rootkit free,
AVG free edition,
BOClean,
Spybot S&D,
SpyWare Blaster,
SpywareGuard &
Windows Defender. TIA:hi:

Why would you want to replace Spybot? I would suggest getting rid of the other program that caused the conflict.

No, what I'm saying is , I re did some settings in Spybot S&D because I was understanding it would speed up the scanning when in reality it caused mine to go much longer.
like 7 hours longer. I UN did them settings & tried it out but didn't work. I'm not going to continue scanning with spybot if i can't get it back to its "normal" scanning of an hour. Post # 12 & 15 here http://www.mypcclinic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17982:hi:

I'm glad it is going faster for you. The settings that you did that were suggested in the other post are the ones I use also and have never had a problem. But then again, they may not work for you.

If my math is correct, the latest version cut 6.25 hours out of the looooooong scan. Its down to 1.75 hours. an hour & 45 minutes.:hi:

Wow!! Spybot on my computer doesn't take nearly that long!

I agree,it shouldn't,but its better than the 8.5 it took earlier that day. My hard drive is no where near full. 100gb harddrive, 17% full.

I did one on my wife's laptop this morning and it took about 20 - 30 minutes. Didn't pay a lot of attention to the time. She has a 60 gig hard drive. There is no way the scan should take that long. Are you doing more than one at a time. If the avg scan is running it slows the computer way down. Back when I ran win98 on a 450 mhz computer I did all of my scans in safe mode. Ran a lot quicker. What all do you have running when you do the scans? The less running the better.

To be embarrassingly honest, I have no idea what could be running when I do my scans. I just know that it depends on how much you have on your harddrive to how long it'll take. When I first started running Spybot , it took maybe 30 minutes or so. I just figured with the extra stuff added & more bugs to look for, it'd take longer:eek:

All that is true and also the speed of the cpu affects it also. Regardless, that is an awful long time. Next time you get a chance, boot into safe mode and try it. Let me know what happens. The reason that it would go faster in safe mode is that only the minimum processes needed are running.

Better than the time you were getting but still quite a bit. I used to run all of my scans in safe mode because my computer was so slow and I had so many processes running in the background. I think I remember that adaware and spybot could both be done this way but not the avg antivirus check. Glad it worked for you.
