I just received a NEW DELL INSPIRON 530 CORE 2 DUO E6550
At this time it is still in its virgin state all i have put on it is the WebRoot Fire wall that was offered for free well its free for now.
Whats happening on bootup is a norton splash screen pops and wants me to install it.
I do not wish norton on this computer it and i do not get along bad enough i have it on another computer i own.
Question i'm asking is how do i get it to stop asking me right now its at my Mom's that is where i'll be using it when or if i get appointed her Guardian.
Nice machine too! to bad i started setting it up and did not have my computer glasses with me so i did the basic's installed a fire wall and tomorrow i'll install the virus program i want and some other programs like AT&T as my IP and the AOL software as backup just in case AT&T goes south at the wrong time :) in time i intend to go dsl as i also need here phone but that will have to wait till i'm comfortable with this new one.
What i need to know is Norton installed but not activeated or is it something that just starts when i bootup and how the heck do i get rid of it and remember i need simple instructions my brain's not wired like you guys it knows 2x4's and weights and measures i can build or repair just about anything as long as i can use a hammer and nails
I'm not that good at fixin computers myself.

When you say "on boot up" do you mean when it gets to your desktop.
Try going to Start > Run and type

msconfig

then check the Startup tab for anything that looks like Norton or Symantec.

Hi Amie yeah as the computer is bootingup and just before it finish's the splash screen for Norton pops up asking me i think its either to register or install i'm not sure as i didn't have the correct glasses to view it.
I just x out and it says your not protected at this point i just click the yes button to shut it off.
I looked in add/remove but as i said i couldn't see to clearly i will have my glass's with me tomorrow for sure!

Yeah i know thats how they got me 4 years ago it was ok but now there programs are resource hogs and when i ran a scan og my other computer i couldn't do anything but watch it work only had a 40gigHD and 256MG Ram so when the drive went south i upgraded it to 160GBHD and a full GB ram but when they reinstalled my WinXp Home i forgot to tell them not to install Norton on it so when i get time i'll have to remove it too!

gray, since Norton aint installed yet, I'd suggest running this http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 UNless the tech here say otherwise.
SINCE it is NOT installed, click start>programs & see if you can see it on there. If so, it should have an UNinstall. I wish you well.:hi:

I bought the same computer as you back in December. Had Avast saved on a flash drive, uninstalled Norton as soon as the machine was set up and installed Avast before I ever hooked it up to the internet. :)

Ok Rachel :) how did you get rid of and was in already installed or just a nag screen at boot up ?
And where can i get the latest Avast i only use this box to do mainly bookkeeping and to make diagrams of jobs i need to do plus of course e-mail and come here as well.
When i opened my first computer i started looking for a wiring Diagram like you'd find on a Blueprint who knew you needed a deg. as a tech

Go to Control Panel and look in Add or Remove Programs and it should tell you which Norton you have.

I don't recall if the nag screen was there or not. I uninstalled it from add/remove and then searched for any other files with 'Norton' or 'Symantec' in the names and deleted them.

Avast is here: http://www.avast.com/
