While you'll hear Linux users often state that we don't need all the anti-malware programs that Windows needs,and we don't, a good firewall is basically all that is necessary, every Linux program has one. We still have to watch our systems and not be too complacent, what one can build another can destroy. Here is an article that is a good read:

I got so used to security w/MS that when I switched I just naturally followed suit in Linux, setup my firewall first off. No matter what you're running, security is not something to be complacent about, period ! :)

a couple of days ago I turned on the firewall for my laptop. First time since I moved to Linux. Still running the desktop without one. Actually stopped using anything other than the windows firewall on XP before I switched. Still safe with no problems. Good article though and the detection tool is running on the laptop as I type.
