I seem to recall an issue with the old AVG where incoming email on OE would all come indicating an attachment, when no attachment was there. Well, it is doing this with 8.0. I wonder what it is we did to correct this so it wouldn't have the paper clip with all email? Probably need to do the same thing with AVG 8.0.

Thanks~

Why are you checking Email Function?
AVG does it automatically as a resident Shield.

Guess I lack in explaining things well.

I am aware of the email checking.

What is happening is it's putting an attachment symbol on every email. That happened with the old AVG, and there was a fix for it in the program, but I forgot what that is.

Well, two days have passed, had the computer getting some cleaning, and no answers. Guess I'll learn to like the attachment paper clip by all my emails.

Open the Control Center, double click the Email Scanner, select the Configure button and check next to " With Attachments Only", or you may turn it off completely by removing the checkmark next to "Certify Email". :)

You must be looking at a version earlier then 8. I don't show this in 8.

Well, *sigh* I guess I'll try to do a search on here, and come up with the thread that dealt with my problem. It is here, and I recall it, just don't recall what the fix was.

In AVG, I went to tools/advance settings/mail filtering, and there is a box that can be checked to remove attachments. I don't know if that would end the paper clip icon after every email except for ones with real attachments or not. Surely someone here knows about this!

That will remove ALL attachments I believe.

Howdy, and ten four, Bill. It's no big thing, just picked up somewhere one time, how to get rid of those paper clips icons except for the real attachment emails. It won't kill the cow if I can't disable it.:D

Take care,

Here we are!

Q:
I get email coming to me with a paper clip preceding the sender but half the time there is no attachment. Is there a ghost attachment in there somewhere?

A:
I have this happen to me all the time in Outlook Express. Finally I decided to investigate and noticed that they always had one thing in common: there was a little message at the bottom... "No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus."

Checking the source code I noticed that this message comes up as a second part to the email. When reading in HTML it treats the two parts as one message but still shows a paperclip in the attachment column.

Switching to plain text mode it show the HTML email as an attached document that can be opened in a web browser.

Now, if you have AVG antivirus you can avoid confusing recipients by preventing the message from being attached. Just turn off outgoing email certification. Messages will still be scanned but the attachment glitch will not occur. Go to the AVG control centre, click on "E-mail scanner", select the "properties" button, then the "configure" button. Under "E-mail scanning" deselect "certify mail".

So don't be afraid of ghost attachments—it's just a quirk caused by AVG antivirus.

Thanks, Worldstart! I was beginning to think I was crazy and dreamed that!

Well, another stump. In 8.0, there is NO way to disable this feature. If anyone can find a way, I'll buy you a steak dinner! Guess I'll learn to love ghost attachments.

This place is becoming deserted. I seldom ever see Amie or anyone.
What's up?

Tony, I did reply in your thread, and have read all the other posts, but as I don't use this program, and the information I gave you was out of date, I really couldn't add anything else. I think the other reason for lack of response is that very few of our members either use AVG, or if they do, they don't have the same problem.

Tony, I just downloaded AVG 8 last night and this morning I have no paperclips unless there is actually an attachment in the e-mail.

Double click the AVG icon in your sys tray. When it opens, double click on 'e-mail scanner', at the bottom of the that page the only thing I have checked is to 'scan incoming mail'.

The message in the middle of the page says for more settings to click on 'tools' and 'advanced'~~in that page unclick 'certify e-mail' (the paper clip is your certification so it should be gone, unless there is an actual attachment).
Hope this helps.

I'll check that out, Loahss. I went that road already, but maybe there's something I missed. I didn't see a box to uncheck, but I'll try it again.

It's a shame no one uses AVG, Amie. It's simple. It works.

Thanks-

Ah, found it! I kept getting the wrong page, but finally stumbled onto it and unchecked that pup!

Thanks again, Loahss!

I use it on ALL my PC's and didn't have that problem.
