New Features and Fixes

* One of the most requested Mozilla Mail features, an option to separate the Recipient and Sender columns in the thread pane, has been implemented.
* Another frequently requested MailNews feature, a preference for placing the user's signature above the quoted text, has been added.
* "Remove from server after x days" has been implemented for POP3 mail accounts.
* vCard support has been added to Mozilla Mail.
* Mozilla 1.6 includes a new cross-platform NTLM authentication mechanism. This feature brings NTLM authentication to the non-Windows Mozilla users for the first time and also delivers more robust and featureful NTLM support to users of older Windows versions.
* Ask Jeeves searching has been added to Mozilla 1.6.
* "Translate Page" functionality has returned to this release of Mozilla.
* The View Source window now has reload functionality.
* Several security-related bugs were fixed in 1.6
* Chatzilla 0.9.48 has been merged, which adds RPL_ISUPPORT support, halfop mode support, and properly masks key and password dialogs.
* Many crash bugs have been fixed.
* One step closer to the kitchen sink, about:about has been implemented. Typing about:about in the address field will give the user a nice list of available about:s.

New Issues

These are items that have been added to the Known Issues page since the last milestone, although the bugs themselves may have existed previously.

* File | Compact Folders for imap accounts now compacts all imap folders in the account, and their offline stores, if any folders are configured for offline use. Previously, this command just compacted the selected folder. To compact just the selected folder, you should now use the folder context menu command Compact this Folder. (Bug 230672)
* On non-Windows systems, pasting in Composer and HTML message compose from the first character of the line can fail.

As a lot of you may know I don't normally run Mozilla but I do try to stay current on the various versions and install them and something I have never been too clear about is do I need to uninstall the previous version of Mozilla or do I just install the new version over the previous version.

I have always uninstalled (except for the profile) and reinstalled the newer version. Elwood is the guru on this, though.

Don'cha love the way Lizard-heads talk?

How do you keep from uninstalling the profile? One of the things I really hate about the way I have been doing it is having to completely re-setup Mozilla up each time a new version comes out.

To my recollection, you are given the option when uninstalling from Add/Remove. Retaining the profile will retain your bookmarks and cookies. Elwood has suggested that the file "mozver.dat" be deleted from the root dir of Windows but now I'm on shaky ground because I have never done this -- and never had any problems moving from version to version. But I haven't changed versions since I settled on FB 0.7 as my only browser and it has been long enough (months) that I have forgotten the details!

Frankly, the best advice on this subject would come from the Lizard King himself. I know he has been properly concerned with Mrs. Elwood's health to the exclusion of other things but he will probably see these posts and reply. If not you might PM him.

Thanks Alan. We are testing the Gecko Engine in My IE2 so I have to have the full install of Mozilla installed to do this. Firebird will not do the trick.

I will wait for a while to see if The King jumps in. http://mpc-testing.com/rb/Emoticons/LOL.gif

There is a utility that permits you to back up important profile folders/files if you want to start fresh with a new profile folder:

http://backup.jasnapaka.com/

I have not personally used this, preferring to backup bookmarks.html, cookperm.txt, abook.mab etc. manually. I do not like to retain old profiles (except for a few important files) because often themes, extensions etc. are not compatible one version to the next.

You should be given the choice during Mozilla uninstallation whether or not to permit the deletion of profiles, and yes it is recommended to uninstall before installing the new version.

I also delete Mozilla folder within application data, Mozilla.org folder within program files, mozver.dat and GRE (which resides inside the common files folder within program files) after uninstallation and reboot.

Here is a good site to learn about profile folders/files locations (bottom of page) and the purpose of these files:

http://www.gemal.dk/mozilla/files.html

[added]

Just checked the link and the page has changed somewhat, no longer shows the profile locations. I will be back with a link that does show the locations shortly.

Here's one:

That is ok LeRoi I know the location. :) If I retain the profile will I have to reset everything in Mozilla or will it remember them?

Settings should be remembered.

I may have done the uninstall wrong but when I uninstalled via Add/Remove it did not give me an operation to retain the profile. Luckily I had download the program you mentioned and backed it up before I started the uninstall and install. :) The backup did retain my settings and when I did the install all was well. :)

I installed 1.6 today and like it.
RB, Add/Remove left behind my profile folder, and a few other folders in the directory, which I kept and then installed over top.
This kept all my preferences and themes which all work with 1.6, including the one LeRoi likes, AfterGlow.
I haven't found any bugs yet.

Maybe I don't know the location of the profile after all. Do you know the location? I thought it was in C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default.

I haven't got time to update to 1.6 right now; too much going on (wife has Lyme Disease test scheduled for in the morning), but will get around to it soon, I hope.

This is my current favorite theme:

That is it, RB. Add/Remove did not delete mine. I think it might have asked if I wanted to keep it or not.

It did not do that for me. It just asked me if I wanted to completely remove Mozilla. It did ask if I wanted to remove the folder in and all files remaining in Program Files but I said no since Firebird is in that folder. Oh well I am not going to worry about it. I had the backup and all is well now.
