There isn't one for the browser itself (yet), AFAIK.

You can use Mozilla Composer to type your message, check the spelling from within Composer (toolbar button or file menu), then copy and paste your messages into the message window of forums etc.

There is a spellchecker for Firebird, as I use it, and I am pretty sure there is one for Mozilla too, I will look into and get back to you.

>> There is a spellchecker for Firebird, as I use it<<

Available as a "browser extension"? I missed it. Or they gave it a cutesy name so I skipped right over it.

Anyway, if you find a spall chucker for Mozilla, if you would, could you tell me the name of the FB extension (or whatever), as well.

Thanx

alan

Check this link: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=34799. This is the MozillaZine forum. Have not checked any of the links. You might also check this link: http://www.buzzys.net/tinyspell.html. Again, I know nothing about this program, just read about it on another forum and there were pro's and con's of course.

Yes, I made sure to get the same one you have....

I am not at all surprised that it doesn't work...I would have been surprised if it did.

Brian , I would love to help , but I'm not sure about giving you the right answer. Maybe LeRoi or Amie could look at this post and tell you if , what I think , is do-able  You could try to disable the spellcheck , in Firebird options . and then go in the profiles C:\Documents and Settings\xxxx\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\9kmfjv21.slt\chrome (unhide all files & folders) and delete the spellcheck . I would then try to install it again . I hope that this will help and soon you will have your spellcheck working for you :thLt:

Suze , I found the site for you to look at :)

Mozilla spellcheck (http://spellchecker.mozdev.org/installation.html)

Jane, this is the spellchecker that has already been included with Mozilla 1.5 and above, do not attempt to install to these versions, it is already there (composer and mail).

Brian, did the dialogue say that the spellchecker had been successfully installed when you downloaded/installed? If not, do you have javascript and software installation enabled in Firebird's options?

Firebird is very much in beta (testing stage) till the 1.0 release, by then I believe the spellchecker and probably a few other extensions will probably be included in the installer.

Until then you must be careful which extensions (and themes) you choose because some conflict with each other and can leave you with a non-working browser.

Quicknote and the Googlebar extension do not play nicely and neither to tabprefs and tabbrowser extensions, they should not be installed together; these are the ones I know about and I feel sure there are others.

LeRoi , I don't have Mozilla , I have Mozilla Firebird . Thus I didn't know the spellchecker was included in an install . Sorry
I would like to know if it's OK to just delete the extension , from the chrome folder, and reinstall if needed ? TY :)

Jane, some extensions have an uninstaller included with them, check to see if this is the case for the extension you would like to uninstall/reinstall; this option will be in tools menu>options>extensions>uninstall or options. If not, the process for uninstalling is involved with editing .rdf files and can be difficult for someone like me. It involves editing .rdf files while keeping proper XML syntax, something I do not understand at all.

I have never installed the spellchecker for Firebird. I use Firebird mainly so that I can help people with it. My preferred browser is Mozilla, by far. I also like Firebird, but until 1.0 comes out, I consider it very much unfinished.

Suze,

I was quoting Jane's reply; do not attempt to install that extension, it is already included with Mozilla 1.5 and 1.6. It is the spellchecker for composer and mail, not for the browser itself.

Thank you LeRoi , that's what I wanted to know . Spellcheck in Firebird doesn't have uninstall , only disable . So I wondered if it's just as easy as in MyIE2 (looove that browser :neener:  ) and you could simply delete that plugin / extension . But you can't  That is not good  TY for help :amie:

I might like MyIE2 also if they ever get away from the IE "back-bone".

I don't know for a fact, but I suspect that MyIE2 is just as vulnerable to exploits as IE, for that reason I won't use it.

I don't like having to add third party software (Spywareblasterguardspyad type programs) to my system to avoid drive-by downloads and other activeX maliciousness. In fact I won't do it.

I'll stick with Mozilla and Firebird.

BTW, has MyIE2 overcome the url spoofing vulnerability yet? Mozilla 1.6 has. :neener:

Also the file extension spoofing vulnerability is pretty scary too, not to mention all the rest of the unpatched IE vulnerabilities.

Why were you wanting to uninstall the Firebird spellchecker?

If it isn't working properly, you can probably install a newer version "over the top" of the old one. (Just guessing as to the problem.)

BTW , SpywareGuard is an excellent program. You would find that if you have it installed , your SpyBot hardly ever finds anything !!!

LeRoi, I was not going to uninstall the spellchecker . It works very well for me, in my Firebird. Brian had a problem with it and it wasn't working for him.
So I wanted to help him . http://www.emotipad.com/newemoticons/Deep-Thinker.gif

If I were Brian, I would create a new profile and see if the spellchecker works within the new profile. If it was installed to the application's folder, this might fix the problem.

If it was installed to the profile folder, creating a new profile and installing the extension might fix the problem.

He might even try deleting the Xul.mfl file from within the profile folder and see if that fixes the problem.

Something doesn't seem quite right with his installation to me. I don't know why really, but it seems like there may have been leftover profile files and/or other files from a prior installation. Never a good thing.

Having never installed the spellchecker for Firebird (and not wanting to) it is a little hard for me to say. Spelling has always been one of my stronger points. Not perfect, but usually pretty good.

Spybot hasn't found anything on my system since the first time I ran it.

It found Backweb entries then and they were from a program that came OEM with my pc, CarbonCopy32.
