First time at this site and I have a problem I hope you can help with. I have no problem surfing the net except for Hotmail. I can't log into Hotmail or Passport for whatever reason. This is the message I get:

NET Passport Unavailable at This Site

The .NET Passport service is currently unavailable at this Web site for one of these reasons:

• The site may contain an error or be experiencing a problem that affects the .NET Passport service.
• The site may not be an official .NET Passport-participating site.

You can:

• Return to this site later and try to sign in or register again.
• Sign in or register for a .NET Passport at another .NET Passport participating site. .NET Passport Site Directory

Since first encountering this problem, I have done all of the following many times to no avail.
Cleaned my IE cach
Cleaned the History
Cleaned the DAT files (I think it cleared)
Checked Security settings
Disconnected my Firewall (ZoneAlarm 4)
Re-installed MS Java machine
Ran System file checker
Ran AdAware
Ran SpyBotChecker
Disabled my PopUp Blocker (Google bar)
Adjusted Security Settings (again)
:bang:
I have always run a clean machine and this is the first real problem I have encountered with IE/XP SP1.

Does anybody here have any suggestions as to what may be the problem.
TIA
Harry

Harry,

Welcome to mpc.

One thing you did not mention you had done was to delete all your Hotmail, msn, and passport cookies, I have read that this can solve a problem with logging on. Also delete any cookies that start with 207.*

Did that and been there :bang: Thanks for the reply. I think I'm just going to repair/replace IE and be done with it. Been wrestling with this problem too long now and am no further ahead. Ah well....

I gave up on IE6 and Hotmail. It just won't let me into the site - it even says that I've got cookies disabled, yet the Internet options says they're enabled. (hmm, could be my firewall?)

Anywhooooo, I was wanting to try Firebird, so I installed it and it's what I use to check my Hotmail on the web.

You might need to check your security setting (Restricted Sites) in IE to make sure you have not restricted the address from access. My wife had run into a problem like this with Upromise and I found that IE-SPYAD was adding the url for Upromise to the Restricted Sites in IE. I had to remove it before my wife could get into Upromise.

Thanks for taking the time to respond Ranger Bob, but I have checked, rechecked and checked once again re the security settings. There just doesn't seem to be an answer for this problem. sigh...

Do you understand what I mean by Restricted Sites? It is not really a setting but an area that url's that are entered into IE to prevent IE from visiting these url's. See my attachment.

I thank you again, but that's exactly where I have checked. I have gone through all the address' in there, one by one, (must be a hundred of them) but nothing to do with Hotmail, Passport or "login". There's an answer somewhere in there, but damned if I can find it yet. I am a stubborn individual who doesn't give up easily. It becomes an issue with me and I and forum members combined will find that answer someplace, :lmbo: unless a new version of IE comes along

Have you checked your hosts file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Thanks Sixpac. Never even thought about the hosts file. Just had a look and to be very honest about it, I've forgoten the background to hosts. I can't remember what I've got to do if and when you find something in Hosts. Can you or someone else here give me some help with it.

If you enter a url into the hosts file it will prevent your computer from loading it. It finds it first on your own computer so it stops looking for it.

If you find the url of a site you would like to visit in the hosts file, delete that line from the hosts file, then go to file menu>save and close hosts.

Thanks LeRoi for the tutorial. Did exactly as you said and found nothing in my Hosts file that looked like it would stop me from going to hotmail. I'm at wits end here (friends say it's a short trip) . Thanks everyone for all the input. I have learned a lot on this forum. I'll just keep on trucking.

In the following directory:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

you'll find a file named "lmhosts.sam" (at least in XPPro - dunno about XPHome)

Open it with Notepad (making sure you uncheck the "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" box) and it's chock full of stuff about the hosts file.

putermaven;

I had the same problem and it took me a while to find the cure. In IE, Click on Tools>Internet Options>Privacy. Towards the bottom of the box which opens, is a section titled "Web Sites". Click the button labeled "Edit". This opens another box titled "Per Site Privacy Actions". In the "Managed Web Sites" list, find and Right-Click msn.com. A menu will open, click on "Allow" and Hotmail should now open.

For some reason, after doing some MS updates, the info in this area gets changed. It is a good idea to occasionally scroll through all the listings here and make sure the sites you need to go to are allowed and the nuisance sites are blocked.

That's not a good find Shiekie, it's a GREAT FIND :jig: . I have been plugging away at this problem for weeks now and finally a resolution. I have posted in probably 4 or 5 forums about this and finally I found this forum :bd: . This is where I go first from now on. Again, many thanks.
