I am trying to fix someones computer...basically just the CDROM drive is broke, but anyway...they are still using IE 4 and I want to update it for them, but do you think IE6 will run OK on it? I've tried to find version 5 or 5.5 but have been unsuccesful.
It is a pII 300mhz with 64mB of ram, running win98.

It should work just fine Brian.
I am running IE6 SP1 on a 300mhz with 64MB of SDRAM on my little brothers computer.

Alex, on this Cyrix computer running 98SE, for some reason IE6 caused nothing but trouble. I had to revert back to IE 5.5.
For some unknown reason on some Computers using 98SE, IE6 does not work properly. I have come across several Computers that are that way. But if you upgrade to IE6 and have a problem you can revert back to your previous Version of IE.

Well, this is just win98 not SE, so if I do load it will I be able to tell of any problems within the few days I will have this computer, or will they arise after I give the computer back...if that is the case I will install 5.5 from Elwoods link.

IMHO I would play it safe and install 5.5.
Since you are dealing with 98.
Most Computers running 98 do have problems with IE6.
I really love it when someone running 95 tries to update to IE6. The whole computer usually locks up. That is why when I set up a Senior Complex Computer, that can't handle 98SE, I install all the Prgs and the Updates I have on CD. I also run a Prg that Stops access to M$ for Updates. That way they can't make a mistake and Lock up the Computer again.

Bruce..
5.5 is good enough for me...should I get just 5.5 or go with SP1 or SP2 from Elwoods link?

My little brother is a PII 300MHz and with windows 98 it did cause problems having IE6 btu after installing 98SE (clean) and updating to IE6 it worked just fine.
It is just a matter of messing with it a bit......try it out and see how it goes.
and if it doesn't work for you or the other person, like mentioned you can revert back to 5.5 or 5.0
**Brian for security reason and patches i think you should go with SP2.

I would go with SP1 first. If the system handles it then move up to SP2.
Friday i released one that could only handle SP1. SP2 caused problems with Windows. The Second one Friday worked fine with SP2. Both computers had 100 Mhz Pentium Chips.

I think I am going to try my luck with IE6 and see if it will work, if not I will go with 5.5...I mean if 5.5 works on a 100mhz PC, hopefully IE6 will work on a 300.

Several Questions? If this is a 300 Mhz machine why is it only using 98 and 98SE?
Also how large a Hard Drive does it have?
How much RAM?

Might be wise to start with 5.5sp1 and use Windows Update to install sp2 then IE6, that way you could downgrade through add/remove to earlier versions if IE6 doesn't run so good.
I think what causes problems with IE6 on older systems is the sp1 update. I think this is a fairly rare "phenomenon". Most systems run 6 okay.
There are some major holes in 5, that's why M$ doesn't offer it anymore. 5.5 also has problems, 6 really needs the sp1 update to be as secure as possible (and of course all critical updates as well).

Yes LeRoi is wise to recommend updating to IE 5.5 before updating to IE 6. This way you would be able to rollback to IE 5.5 if IE 6 gives you problems.

I believe I will put 5 on first then...but I can't do that until I get a cdrom drive to replace this broken one, because I will have to download that 80MB file and burn it to a cd to put it on there...
Bruce... I am going to guess that because this computer is about 5 years old, that is why it is running windows 98. The person I am fixing this for has no computer knowledge really...so that is why there have been no upgrades...when I got it today it only had 32MB of ram, and I had a extra 32 so I throught that in, and now it has 64. Still not enough...Oh and the HD is 6GB.

Here is another question....I cannot find out what model this computer is so I can't use crucial to determine how much ram this thing could handle. I ran adia32 and it says the mobo is unknown so that is no help..
This is a Packard Bell and was manufactured in 1998. I tried the packard bell website, and this old serial number wasn't recognized by them...anyone have any ideas how to find out the max ram..?

What is the serial number and what type of ram does it take (SDRAM most likely :) )
and what type (model) of computer is it? If available

I found an manual online which has a pic of the motherboard, which is exactly like the one installed so I am going to bet that this is it...it says the max ram is 256 which is probably right.

Just want to let you guys know that I installed IE6 and it is working like a charm...no probs at all. Even works faster than IE 4. Now, if I can get the ram to work, I can get this smelly, dusty thing out of here.
