Hello,
My daughter has IE6 and W98, 61% resources, 10.2GB free space. She doesn't know the name of her puter, under My Computer it just says Label and nothing in the box. She get's an error dll msg when turning on puter (she doesn't remember the msg.) She has lots of problems but we thought perhaps she could do a repair on the IE but it is not listed in the Add/Remove list. Can someone tell me why it's not there? And how to put it there so she can try the IE repair. I am sure I will be back with more of her issues if I can't solve them. Hoping someone can answer me quickly as we are trying to work on this now. Thank you.

Have you looked under Microsoft Internet Explorer in Add/Remove instead of just Internet Explorer. If it is not there under that heading then go to Start > Run > and type

Msinfo32

then click OK.

Under the Tools menu there should be an Internet Explorer Repair Tool listed.

Eve,
Thanks for that path to the repair tool. However I would also like to know why IE isn't listed in the Add/Remove list, and how I can put it there. Any thoughts welcomed. Thanks for your help.

Two things can cause this. If IE6 was the only version installed on the PC then it would be unable to roll back to a previous version so it would not appear in the Add/Remove. Along with the same theme if the previous IE version was removed from the Windows folder for some reason the same thing would happen. I don't remember if when you upgrade a previous version of IE it gives you the option to not retain a roll back copy or not like it does when you upgrade the operating system but this could be another reason.

You could try just installing IE6 over your existing version. You might have to download a copy so you can do the install but if you have SP1 installed then you might have problems trying to do this.

Ranger Bob,
How would I know if she has SP1 installed? Also is there a "find" search she could do to find IE6 to install over her current one or maybe there's a .exe file she should use.

You say: "You could try just installing IE6 over your existing version. You might have to download a copy so you can do the install but if you have SP1 installed then you might have problems trying to do this".

How would she install IE6 over her existing version? I will make note of the download link in case she needs it. What would she do about all the IE files/folders she has now? I appreciate your help so much. She does not take good care of maintenence of her puter and I am trying to teach her to do so. Thank you.

To see what version you have go to IE Help/About Internet Explorer. Take a look at my attachment to see how my version looks.

To install over the previous version you would download the IE6 version from the link I gave you and then execute the setup program. You would not need to know the location of the existing program.

If SP1 is already installed then she could reinstall SP1 by downloading from this link:

As a side note my son had a virus on his laptop at college until he came home at Christmas. I got it all cleaned up for him and within a month of going back to school the laptop has the virus back on it. :) Oh well he comes home in May so I guess I know what I will be doing while he is home. :) In his defense is pretty good about updating Norton but in a college environment it must be very hard to keep the LAN clean to prevent this stuff from spreading.
