View Full Version : Firefox
I have just downloaded the FireFox setup with installer. Can someone tell me what to do. Do I just click on that and thats it, or will I be asked to choose options etc.? Untill I get used to it I dont want it to become my default browser so hope it wont 'take over' or anything. This is new territory for me so I am a bit wary.
I have been impressed by all the FireFox fans recommendations, so have decided to take the plunge!

Eve,
Relax and take a deep breath I can asure you, you will like FF.
Now it will ask to be default broswer and you can choose not to make it your default, simply click "no" and if you do not wish to see this option simply uncheck the box that tells you not to check for default on opening (you will notice it on the bottom of the page :) )
I would suggest going to tools> options> extebsion> and get new extension ( A blue link on the bottom of the page) here you will see the many features and plug ins FF has to offer.
If you need any further help and suggetion keep on posting :)
OK Alex, I am into it, starting now. Big deep breath has been taken and I am ready to CLICK. Will post later on results!!!

Frivolous post -- if I can do it you sure can.
Actually it runs great even without any tweaks or extensions but those are part of the charm of using it. Have fun
Well I have got it up and running and I love it! Few glitches, calender wont work and the extra themes I installed do not display properly. They give multiple instances of icons on menu bars. Also a family website I created through geocities will not display correctly, and the sound on it goes haywire. (Its fine on IE and Slim Browser.)
All in all though Firefox gets the nod. New MPC and new browser!!
If anyone has any thoughts on above probs would be pleased to hear. :)

I think this would be because geocities site do not support firefox or the other way around. Some sitea are not viewable or usable with FF, for example www.subprofile.com will let you browse but you cannot make any changes to your profile under FF, IE is needed.
One advantage to FF is that it reads and decodes the HTML or webpage code faster than Internet Explorer. Thus making FF a tad bit faster than IE. Mike explained it to me on a past thread :)

The reason some sites don't work right is (usually) due to poor coding... The gecko engine is fairly code strict, so things that don't match the w3c compliant coding may not render correctly.
Thanks for replies re Website. It can still be viewed but some of the pics are misplaced slightly.
I still am not able to use the Firefox calendar. I tried reinstalling it . Attached is the message I get.

Eve... I don't know anything about the calendar as I've never used it, but I'll try to install it tonight at home and see if I can figure out what's wrong... Thanks for the screenshot!

You might try installing the "User Agent Switcher" extension. Then with a couple of clicks you can spoof things into thinking you have IE running and maybe your site will be OK that way. It doesn't work with everything but has helped a couple of instances.
Thanks Bluie, I have had a look at it, not sure how it works. Do I just select IE6 beside User Agent Switcher ? Do I do this just to view the wonky site or leave it like that?

It's best to do it only on specific sites... The switcher can cause problems with java or flash if you leave it set this way.

Well feathers wonder what happened to the answer that was supposed to have been posted last night? Let's see if it works right this time.
Obviously our GolfPRoRM aka Firefox Fanatic is a FFPro! Even providing an explanation.
If you forget to set it back to default when you leave the site, the next time you open FF you get yelled at. It seems to work best to set it to IE just before opening any site you know needs it. Most sites will complain at you that they want BigDaddy (IE) then you can change the setiting and refresh the page.
It has been suggested that user complain to the site adminsitrator that they need to make their code more standard compliant. The more complaints they get the more apt they are to fix it.
edit: don't know what went wrong last night but this one worked :)

Eve, If you post the web site you are having problems with it is easier to check out. Also, about the calendar. Are you using the one for firefox, thunderbird, or the stand-alone. The last can be run independent but it clearly states that it is a beta and not to be used as the only storage of important data. You also have to be careful about downloading and using themes. They often are not updated right away when a new release comes out. Make sure you check that the ones you download are for your version of firefox.

John, I got the calendar from here http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/ (via Options/extensions on Firefox Browser - get more extensions) It says its for Firefox.
I would be too embarrassed to post my website address here. (Its a very amature attempt!)

Haven't used this in a while. Didn't particularly fit my needs. I use an old version of Ecco PIM which was released as freeware when it went out of production. I did try it for a while. Were you aware that you can download and use calendars from an apple site? People have written calendars for just about everything. If you want I will find the site and post a link. They have holidays for different countries, different sports that show all of the play dates, and so much more, even new movie and dvd releases. I am downloading the calendar that you have now as I type. I will try it later and let you know if I get it to work or not.
John
Sorry, I missed this. On the page that talks about the calendar there are links to the holiday files. Go to the faq page and there is a link there where you can find the apple calendars.

Tried the calendar in firefox, doesn't work. tried the standalone, doesn't work. Will have to check through the forums at mozillazine and see if there is anything there.
