View Full Version : Eve's Tips!
The following hints I have collected from various sources since first becoming 'computerised'. Some I think are worth passing on. I take no credit for any of them. Many of you will know all of them. They are aimed at newbies and those like myself who still have a lot to learn. If one helps you please let me know. Likewise if you think they are rubbish!:)
:) Tip#1
Outlook Express Tip Create a shortcut to often used mail addresses on your desktop without opening OE
1.Right-click the desktop, click New, and then click Shortcut.
2.In the Command Line box, type mailto:,followed by the required address , (ie mailto:eve@herplace.co.nz) and then click Next.
3.In the "Select a name for the shortcut" box, type your name for the shortcut, and then click Finish.
Now you just have to click on this shortcut to send a message to that person.
Bonus Tip: Backups are never a waste of time! :)

Eve, how about the one to "copy" ones info and post it on the forum. like the one where u posted the info of nerotool. ie, attached thumbnail So one can show other ppl what one is talking about. This makes sense or do i need to use the mentioned tip?
Myardor, To attach a thumbnail you need to go into "Advanced" when you post a reply.Scroll down to "Attach Files" Click "Manage attachments". A window will open for you to browse to whatever you want to attach. Select it and click "Upload".
The thumbnail will then appear in your message and can be clicked on for full sized view.
:D Eve
Edit: I think I may have misunderstood your question. Did you mean how did I copy the screenshot? I use ScreenSeize which you can download HERE (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,22140,00.asp) from PCMag (free) but there are several other similar programs available. :) Eve

Eve: Just make the shortcut mailto:me name it mail or letterto, (?), now it'll open to a letter, with me in the address. backspace it out, then add address of who? to receive the message. Only one shortcut for all this way. I've used this since '97, works great. George.
Nice one George, but have to assume you remember the addresses of the people you want to send the mail to! otherwise by the time address book has been opened and address found its not saving much time.I find it easier to just have them labelled say George, Bill, or whoever and have the addresses already there. Some of us older ones dont remember as well as we used to
Create a Screen Saver Shortcut on Desktop
To create a shortcut to any screensaver to instantly access it from your desktop.

2.Right Click on chosen screensaver and choose Send To, Desktop (create shortcut)
Bonus Tip:

Love this idea Eve. I hate going to a mail program and doing all that clicking before I come up with an address. Saves alot of time. Do you know if you can do this with yahoo and hotmail? Some of my addresses aren't in OE.?
adding another bonus tip to Eve's great tip
In IE you can save a bookmak to your desktop by right click on page & click on create shortcut.
If using Mozilla to save a bookmark to your desktop
drag the URL to your taskbar and later place it where you want it.

By just dragging and dropping the document to the shortcut icon it will print.

Change the Title Bar in Internet Explorer
Have some fun and change your title bar name from Microsoft Internet Explorer to a personalised name of your own.
(this involves editing the registry, better back up your registry before starting)
Click Start | Run and type regedit to open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.
In the right pane, double click the value called "Window Title."
In the data value box, type whatever text you want to display in the title bar.
Close the registry editor and open a new instance of IE. Your new title bar text will be displayed.
Bonus Tip: Quickly create a desktop shortcut to an open webpage by dragging the IE icon at top left of title bar and dropping on desktop.(Yes, I have posted this before - its one of my favourites!)
just a little addition to Eve's bonus tip
if you right click on an open webpage and scroll to create shortcut that will put a short cut on the desk top

Add a Folder to the Taskbar
Right click on the Taskbar, select Toolbars and click New Toolbar. Browse to the Folder you want and all the items in your chosen folder will be added to your taskbar. You can remove the toolbar from the Taskbar by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing the item to remove the check mark
(Note:Win98/Me/2000 users may see a list of items from the folder strewn along the Taskbar. Locate the vertical divider at the left end of the folder listing, click it, and hold; then drag it as far to the right as possible. This will turn the folder into a single entry on the Taskbar, showing the folder’s name and a set of double arrows. Click the double arrows and a pop-up menu will display all folder items. In WinXP the folder is added as a single entry with the double arrows already in place. )
Bonus Tip: Quickly convert a folder on your desktop into a toolbar by dragging to the edge of the screen. (To remove - right click and remove check from the folder under Toolbars)

Can you possibly do this with Paint in Windows? I just removed Irfanview from my PC because I was having problems with it and I removed as many applications that I could.
Bobi, Paint does not give you the option to Save As Ico. I am not sure, but I think it would work if you Save As bitmap. :) You would have to use Strech/Skew under Images on toolbar to resize.

Good 1 Eve ;)
Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base
If you are like me and find the MS Knowledge Base confusing try searching it by this method. Much easier! :)
Go to http://www.google.com/advanced_search
Type search words in plain English in the "all of the words" box and then:
1)Select "100 results" from the drop down menu (unless you prefer to see fewer results at a time).
2) Select to return pages with results written in English.
3) Input to only return results from the site or domain "microsoft.com".
4) Click on "Google Search."
Put a shortcut on your desktop for quick reference
An even better way is to go to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/searchme2.htm
Quick Tip: Windows XP has a full Glossary of computer terms. Just search from Start for Glossary.chm and put a shortcut on your desktop (or find it in C:\Windows\Help)

If you have Windows 98 /ME/XP you can test how your graphics and sound system uses Directx, the program that is used to run audio/visual programs. Go Start, Run and type Dxdiag and click OK. It will tell you if you have Microsoft's Directx and a lot more about your system. Run each test in turn.
Bonus Tip: To increase the width of scroll bars at the side and bottom of any program - right click on the Desktop/ Properties/ Appearance/ Scrollbar and adjust the size. (In XP click Advanced to find it.)

JohnJohn, I dont think its possible to do this. Do you think they would be better in a single thread? Amie or Ryan may have an opinion on this. If you look at the bottom of page you will see "similar threads" and should be able to get to them from there.
I must reiterate what I said in #1 that I take no credit for any tips I post here. They are just bits and bobs I have found useful, all got from other sources.I am pleased that others find some of them useful too :)
I love your tips Eve...and your toes..... :cjlol:

How to Split the Screen in Microsoft Word 2000

Empty Recently Used Documents Links (copied from PC Today)
Windows XP Professional includes a folder on the Start Menu called My Recent Documents that contains fifteen of your most recently used documents. If you want to clear the contents of this folder, right-click Start, click Properties, and then click Customize. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Clear List button in the Recent Documents section of the Customize Start Menu dialog box. If you're using the Classic Start menu, click the corresponding Customize button and then click the Clear button in the Start Menu section of buttons. If you want to get rid of the Most Recent Documents Folder, click Customize and then clear the checkmark from the List My Most Recently Opened Documents check box.
Windows XP Home Edition doesn’t display the My Recent Documents Folder by default. To enable the My Recent Documents Folder, right-click Start, click Properties, click Customize, and then put a check in the List My Most Recently Opened Documents check box. Click OK and then click Apply.

It is nice to personalize your emails with a handwritten signature.
I wrote this out some time ago for a friend and thought would post it here.
Create a Signature for Outlook Express
1.Sign paper
2.Scan – make sure to get as small a background as possible by diminishing it until just the signature is on the scanned bit. “Save As” Signature. I made a folder in My Documents and keep several signatures in it.
3.When you want to sign your email click ‘insert’ then ‘picture’, then browse to folder and click chosen signature to insert.
If you want to you can further enhance it by making the background transparent. See Linda’s excellent Graphics & Images Tutorial for how to do this. (page 2)
Quick Tip:
OE Tip
Rather than copying and pasting onto a new message, just highlight what you want to paste, drag it to any one of the folders to the left of your email program and ....boom...a new email will appear with the highlighted portion in the body.
I really like this one :) I copied it from a newsletter and it stated that this tip only works if you have the Preview Pane enabled. I never have this enabled but it still seems to work.

3 Quick Tips. All work in XP but I am not sure about other OSs
* When you have Internet Explorer open you can quickly access a folder within it by typing its name in the address bar. e.g. My Computer, My Documents etc.
* To create a toolbar from a folder drag it to the edge of the screen. (to undo right click blank space on toolbar and deselect folder under ‘Toolbars’)
* Don't click the little box in the right hand corner to enlarge or reduce a page. Double click the large strip of color at the top of the browser to change size. It's a lot easier to locate.

How to Reinstall Internet Explorer 6
If you're having serious problems with IE, one way to repair it is to run the Windows XP installation CD to repair Windows. But what if you don't have your copy of the installation CD on hand? There's another way: you can just reinstall IE 6, but first you need to edit the Registry so Windows will think IE isn't installed. Here's how:
Open your favorite Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Right click the value labeled IsInstalled and select Modify.
Change the data value setting from 1 to 0.
Close the Registry Editor.
Now you can download and install IE 6 (with service pack 1) from the following link:
http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=041026HT-Download_IE6
Note that this also includes the installation files for Outlook Express. Also note that you may need to reapply Windows XP Service Pack 2 to regain the SP2 changes to IE (such as the popup blocker).
Quick Tip:
Protect important files from accidental deletion or content changes by flagging them with the Read Only file attribute. To change a file's attribute to Read Only, right click on the file name. Select Properties. On the General tab, check the "Read Only" check box. Click apply, then OK.
:)Tip #33
3 short ones you may have forgotten :)
IE Tip – If you have your links bar displayed in IE you can quickly add the current page to it by dragging the IE “e” from top left corner.
Print Preview – Quickly access print preview for a web page by pressing Alt+F+V.
XP clipboard - Can't find XP's clipboard? Click Start | Run | enter clipbrd .

Some Firefox Shortcuts
Firefox Keyboard shortcuts:

press / and it will open the find box and will find the text as you type it
F3 to find next
Ctrl+T - new tab
Alt+Enter - Open address in new tab
Ctrl+(1 to 9) - select tab 1 - 9
Also with Firefox tabs, Ctrl+Tab lets you tab through all open tabs. Ctrl+Shift+Tab takes you backwards through them.
Firefox Mouse Shortcuts:
Middle click on tab - Close tab
Ctrl + Left Click on link will open in new tab.
My Favourite one:-Left click and hold any link and drag it to an open tab and release. The link will open in that tab.

Hi Eve, I like your story about the meeces, I've been at this since '94 and am barely out of the 'newbie' stage. Your hint for the shortcut didn't work for me, when I clicked on "next" after filling out the required info in the box, I got an error message telling me "Cannot find the mail file". Thanks again for taking the time to share your hints. Per Johansen
With Mike's blessing I am going to post a handy tip each week (until I run out!) When our house first became computerised (three & half years ago)I knew nothing, and the installation man looked sideways at me when I asked him how many 'mice' were needed. After eyeing it up for a week or so I decided to give it a try and have not stopped since. During this time I have found many helpful hints from various sources and have saved many of them. Some I think are worth passing on, so here goes.I take no credit for any of them. Many of you will know all of them. They are aimed at newbies and those like myself who still have a lot to learn. If one helps you please let me know. Likewise if you think they are rubbish!

As I have been otherwise engaged rescuing a geriatric cat from the roof (3 times in and hour and a half, and I am too geriatric myself for ladder climbing :)) this is a very lazy tip this week - copied directly from Cloudeight Information Avenue - Issue #154 - January 7, 2005 and which I think is very useful.
Symbols can be created even if there is not a dedicated key for that purpose....
These are the most popular....
ALT+130 = é (accent over e)
ALT+0176 = ° (degrees for temp)
ALT+0169 = © (copyright)
ALT+0174 = ® (registered trademark)
ALT+155 = ¢ (cent sign)
ALT+0153 = ™ (trademark)
There are others available... paragraph and sections ¶ § (used in legal documents) and umlauts and other markings used in various languages.... can be found at: http://www.mesweet.net/altkeysymbols.html

Remove Hibernation File
The Hibernation feature takes a lot of disk space ( on my computer it is 368MB ) If you do not use it you can disable it by going to Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, Hibernate tab, and uncheck the Enable hibernation box.
Eve,
Thanks for the tip. Just wanted you to know I could not find Performance and Maintenace in the control panel. So I right clicked on my desktop>properties>screensaver tab > Power tab>Hibernate tab. Unchecking saves me 1000+ MB's of space.
:jig:

Hi Geo, Yes that is another way to access it, and the one I use too. In Control Panel you may have the Classic View set. In the left panel you can change it to Category View where you will see Performance and Maintenance, along with 8 other categories.
That is a big disk space saving for you :)
Eve thanks for the ALT KEYS SYMBOLS page I use to make silly faces with them and lost them way back in windows 95

IE Auto Complete
A feature of Internet Explorer is AutoComplete. Some people find it handy for Internet Explorer to remember their private information, such as user names and passwords. Others who are more concerned about security may not like this feature. You can delete the passwords remembered by Internet Explorer and no one else can use your private information that you have previously entered.
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools/Internet Options.
2. From the Internet Options dialog box, select the Content tab.
3. Click the AutoComplete button.
4. Click the Clear Passwords button.
5. Click OK to confirm your actions.
6. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box
Quick Tip:
Selecting an Underline Style

Emailing Files
Sending exe and zip files through e-mail can be a problem with some anti virus programmes.
To overcome this just rename the file to something like
.exe - to - .oxe
and
.zip - to - .zap
The recipient then just renames the file back to .exe or .zip and the files can be used as normal

:)Tip #48
Word Doc Desktop Shortcut
You can create a shortcut to a specific place in a document. Make sure you can see the desktop from the open document, then drag and drop any part of the document (say, a sentence in a word processing document or a range of cells in a spreadsheet) to the desktop using the right mouse button. When you let go, choose Create Document Shortcut Here and close the document. The next time you want to open the document to that place, click on the new shortcut. * Click "define custom colors"

Windows will automatically open and close each file so you can leave your printer working away and go and do something else.

Eve, I just read your last tip. I immediately had to try the F3 tip. Being my usual self I wasn't thinking and was using Firefox instead of IE when I tried it. It opened a search box in firefox also. Pretty neat. Please, keep the tips coming.

I saw a tip, I don't know if it was one of yours or not, but couldn't find it here.
The tip was, like I had three colums on my screen when I clicked start/programs and I knew that I had more programs then the 3 colums showed.
The tip lets you make them into 1 column that has a little black arrow at the bottom of the column that you use to scroll up and down the column.
I wanted to show this to a friend of mine, and my senior moment has set in, and for the life of me I can't remember or find how to do this.
Can you refresh my memory?

In Windows XP go to Start/Settings/Taskbar and Start Menu/Start Menu/Customize and then select Scroll Programs in the drop down menu. I believe this may only be available with the Classic Start Menu setting.

In Windows XP go to Start/Settings/Taskbar and Start Menu/Start Menu/Customize and then select Scroll Programs in the drop down menu. I believe this may only be available with the Classic Start Menu setting.
I don't think this was it, as I unchecked this and rebooted and this did not change my setting as explained above.
I do not use the Classic Start Manu but my list does appear as one column with the arrow top and bottom. I do not remember what I did to make this happen.I do have scroll programs checked in the advanced 'customise start' menu though. Did you remember to click OK before exiting?
An easy way to get to Customise Start Menu is to right click near the clock and select properties.
Edit - I have just checked 'scroll' and my menu apears in columns so this definitely must be the way to set is as RB said.

You were right, I had to uncheck the clock box and then check it again to make 'apply' active, then it changed my scroll settings. 'Apply' has to be active in order to make changes, and that wasn't the case when I tried it in the above post.
Now I can forward this info to my friend.

Multiple Email Recipients
It can be confusing for email recipients when you send Blind Carbon Copies, if you place the first address in the ‘To’ area. This is the name that all recipients will see. To avoid confusion leave the ‘To’ space blank and insert all recipients in the 'Bcc' area, and they will see only their own address.
(All addresses will be visible to all recipients if you use 'Cc'.)
Quick Tip
XP IE6 Auto Search from Address Bar - type ‘go’ or ‘find’ followed by a keyword in the address bar for a quick search.

Outlook Express Business Card
The easiest way to exchange contact information with people over the Internet is by attaching a business card to e-mail messages. A business card is your contact information from the Address Book in vCard format. The vCard format can be used with a wide variety of digital devices and operating systems.
You must have your contact information in your Address Book before you can create a business card.
In the Address Book, create an entry for yourself, and then select your name from the Address Book list.
On the File menu, point to Export, and then click Business Card (vCard).
Select a location in which to store the file, and then click Save.
To add your business card to an e-mail message, on the Insert menu, click My Business Card.
Thie above is copied directly from the OE Help file

Print Screen and Save
Capture:To capture the entire screen press the Print Screen key once. To capture the current Active Window press Alt + Print Screen
Save: Open the Clipboard by clicking on Start | Run, and typing "CLIPBRD" and click OK. Clipboard Viewer will open.
In Clipboard Viewer window, click File | Save As, and navigate to location you wish to save in. This will be saved as a CLP file which will be enormous so best to convert it to jpg (with IrfanView) after saving. If you only require part of the screenshot this can be cropped in IrfanView also, and will further reduce the file size.
Quick Tip:
Alternate Way to Copy & Paste:
After the text is highlighted, hold down the CTRL key at the same time pressing the INSERT key.
Open wherever you want to paste to and hold down the SHIFT key pressing the INSERT key. The text is pasted into the document.

Hi Eve, Is it ok to post a tip here, too? If not, please delete this for me? But if it is ok... the modification below can save the step of saving the capture, or other image, as a clp file.

:)Tip#74
Print Screen and Save
Capture:To capture the entire screen press the Print Screen key once. To capture the current Active Window press Alt + Print Screen
Save: Open IrfanView,Go to Image>Create New (empty) image,
The "Create New Image" dialog box will pop up. The values that you enter will be remembered... (I usually set mine to 100 X 100 but 1 X 1 would work just as well. This will only slow you down the first time you use it.)
Click "OK"... your "New" image is now available as a new window in IrfanView.
Go to: Edit>Paste and the screenshot (or other image) that you have copied will be pasted into IrvanView.
When you are done with the image... File>Save As...
.
.
Thanks Ben, happy to have comments about anything I post here.
The way I do it myself is just to open IrfanView and right click and paste. The reason I gave the clipboard method is because not everyone has IrfanView. Of course that method works just as well with other image editors, MS Paint etc. Image can also be pasted into a text document using MS Word or WWP.

Cool! I never noticed the "paste" button becoming active in IrfanView when there is something on the clipboard before... so there's another way, I guess.
I have MS Word for the first time in my life, pre-installed on my notebook. I guess it is time I started to learn about a real word processor instead of notepad replacements. Sigh. I sure managed to avoid it for a long time though!

Send To
To Populate the right click ‘send to’ menu
Open X:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo\
where X is your drive letter and username is your username (it is hidden so go to Tools.Folder Options>View and unhide it)
You can drag and drop any program shortcuts into this folder.
A good trick is to make a shortcut on the desktop to the Send To Folder.
Drop the shortcut into X:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo\ then any program you wish to put there just right click and choose Send To >Send to.
Saves having to navigate to it each time:)
Quick Tip:If you do not use a pop-up blocker press Alt key and hit the F4 key as soon as they start to appear .

%systemroot%. . . . Opens Windows folder
hcp://system/netdiag/dglogs.htm. . . . . runs Network Diagnostics.
hcp://system/sysinfo/sysInfoLaunch.htm. . . . . runs Advanced System Information

Thank You for the Tips!
I just came across this for the first time and felt the need to copy this from > Ben's Thread "How to Post an Image" < but it applies to you also.
Thank You!!
It is only 2 word with a couple of explanation marks behind it.
It means so much to be to be able to tell you that I really appreciate tat you posted these instructions.
Thank You for taking the time to help those of us that wanted to learn it but didn't fully understand in what sequence it needed to be in order to accomplish the task.
Here is a HUG for you and all the other people here that have unselfishly given their time to help those of us that is needing and wanting to learn things.

Firefox Downloads
After you download a file in Firefox, you see the Downloads dialog box.
The two visible commands give you a chance to open the file immediately (handy if you want to install a download right away) or remove it from the list of downloads.
But right-click and you get two extra choices.
The Open Containing Folder option opens Windows Explorer in the folder where you saved the file. The Properties dialog box tells you where the file came from and where you saved it.
The above was copied from Ed Bott’s site http://www.edbott.com/weblog/ Lots of interesting stuff there.

:) Tip #80
This was copied directly from CloudEight InfoAve newsletter. I have made the shortcut and find it very useful :)
Make System Restore A Snap
Windows XP Home and Professional
Advanced User Tip
You can write a little script that will make using System Restore quicker and easier. After you've completed this "tip" you'll have a little script on your desktop that you can run before making changes to the registry, or installing a major program like an anti-virus, firewall, or anti-spyware program. That way, if anything goes awry, you'll be able to restore you computer to a time right-before you make the registry changes or installed the program.
Here's how to create a script that will create a restore point when you double-click it:
1. Using Notepad, type the following listing and save it with the file extension .vbs. Important! Make sure that you enclose the file name in quotation marks so Notepad doesn't add the .txt file extension to the name. For example "SystemRetore.vbs" or whatever you want to name it. Whatever you call it, it must end in .vbs. If you don't enclose the entire file name in quotes Notepad will save it as a plain text file and it will be useless to you.
Copy and paste only the text in "teal" below to a notepad file and save it as instructed above.
Set SRP = GetObject( "winmgmts:\\.\root\default:Systemrestore" )
CSRP = SRP.CreateRestorePoint( "Before Changes", 0, 100 )
2. Double-click the script file you just created, any time you want to create a new System Restore Point.
It only takes a few seconds to create a restore point this way. And no dialogs are shown to confirm that a Restore Point was created. If you did the script correctly, we assure you a restore point will be created when you double-click the script. If you want to double-check you can click "Start" "All Programs" "Accessories" "System Tools" "System Restore" and click "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time" . You'll see the restore point you created (called "Before Changes") right there. Now be sure to cancel out of System Restore.

RE: Tip#80 (XP System Restore)
Any of you who liked this script may like to replace it with this one that Ben has made and to which he has added Request and Confirm dialogues.
The .zip file contains a Readme text file, an icon (should you wish to use it) and the vbs file which is a text file you will need to change the extension of - from .txt to .vbs
All is explained in the Readme.
I now use it and it is nice to know the restore point has actually been made.
Edit: file replaced with revised one that also checks to make sure System Restore is not disabled.

Eve,
I have the guest account off but have two users, myself and my granddaughter. Mine is admin and hers is not. I have tweakui installed and did the auto login there. When the computer starts it boots into my account. She can switch users and does if she wants to use it. I also have a microsoft wireless optical mouse with fingerprint reader. That is what we use to switch users, just touch the pad and wait a moment. Of course I trust her and am not afraid that she will mess up anything.

Thanks John. I have TweakUI but had never noticed that tweak :) A much easier way of doing it.

XP Secondary Logon Service
This was copied directly from WXPNews newsletter 6/6/06
How to enable and use the secondary logon service
Many PC users log onto their systems with administrative accounts all the time, because they need to be able to run certain programs or perform tasks that require administrative privileges and don't want to have to log off and log back on with an admin account to do so. But running as an administrator puts your system at risk. You might not realize that Windows XP has a feature called secondary logon that allows you to run a program using an admin account when you're logged on with an account with lesser privileges. Here's how to enable the service and use it with a shortcut.
1. To enable secondary logon, you must first log on as an administrator. Then right click My Computer and select Manage.
2. In the Computer Management console, expand Services and Applications and select Services.
3. In the right pane, right click Secondary Logon and select Properties.
4. In the Properties dialog box, select Automatic for Startup Type and then click Start.
5. Click OK and close the Computer Management console.
6. To use secondary logon with a program shortcut, first locate the shortcut in the Programs menu, then press the SHIFT key while right clicking the shortcut and select Run as.
7. In the Run as dialog box, click the following user option, then enter the user name and password for the admin account you want to use to run the program and click OK.
Quick Tip: Hold down shift when you open a folder or when you switch into thumbnail view. This will turn of the file names, giving more space for the thumbnails. Doing it again turns them back on.

Tip#1 for Outlook Express, was at the bottom of Eve's first post in this thread, which also contained the index above it, so when you clicked the link you must have missed the tip at the very bottom of the post. I hope Eve does not mind, but I have edited her first post so now the tip is at the top, and the index is below it. :)

How to Split the Screen in Microsoft Word 2000
Quick Tip
Great tip Eve. Works with Word 2002 too. Will come in handy with my work. Always wished I could do this when I draft language and want to compare it to similar language later in document. Thank you, Joel
I am glad you found this useful Joel. It is always nice to get feedback. :)

:)Tip # 91
CD Burning Trick
With Windows XP’c built-in burning feature you can not add more files. You can though overwrite any old pictures/data/music by giving the new file the same name as any already on the cd and overwriting it.
I have a question about this one. I have used nothing else the built-in burning feature on XP since I got this computer back in 2003 I believe. I use it to save all my photos to CD's. I have always been able to add photo files to a CD until it is full...some have taken me months to fill up...am I missing something or not reading this tip correctly?
I also have made up CD's with various anti-spy programs and clean up programs, adding new ones to the ones all ready on the disks. I give these disks to people who's computers I help clean up or help set up.
I am not overwriting photos or files, I am adding to the disks. They all show and work in various computers.
I am embarassed to say that I can not remember where I sourced this tip in February 2006- I have looked through my archives and dont have it listed.
As I use Nero for all my photo backups to disk I am not so familiar with the built in XP system.
I am happy to delete #91 if it is not correct - in fact there are probably several other tips that are outdated or irrelevant by now.
Do you use CD-RW disks or CD-R?

Do you use CD-RW disks or CD-R?
Here are the instructions I used from here;
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/bridgman_august13.mspx
Let's say you forgot a file. Or better yet, let's say you put a mere 200 MB on the CD, and it's really bugging you that there's 500 MB going unused. Penny–pinchers never fear, it's not too late to add more!
Simply drag and drop more files into the folder and they will be added to the waiting list for the next recording session. Windows XP fully supports creating multi–session CDs. Just be aware of the fact that adding a file or folder of the same name replaces the prior version.
I use CDR's and first place my photos in a folder and give the folder a name...either the date I took them or the event. If I have more than one folder of photos of the same event I always add a number like...Birthday Party 1 and Birthday Party 2...that way it doesn't replace the original one. Then I choose Send to CD-RW Drive. They are then placed in a temp file which opens telling me I have files waiting to be burned. I then Highlight each one and tell it to burn to disk. They are burned to the disk. I am then asked if I want to burn them to another disc, I say no and the files are then removed from that temp file.
Tip 91 now deleted and replaced :)
Eve can't you make the tips list a sticky

Hi Eve, Hint # 101. XP Disk Cleanup did not work for me.....what am I doing wrong....
Not sure Marie - did you get the menu window ? (see attachment)
If not make sure you have not included the quotation marks when you copy and paste the command in the run box and don't forget to click OK.
Do you have Disk Clean up scheduled? Here are instructions on how to do it.
