I have tried Thurnderbird and liked it but could not use AVG with it so it is uninstalled. Did I do something wrong? Anyone have any ideas?

AVG wouldn't work at all? or do you mean that it wouldn't specifically check Thunderbird's mail?
AVG is not specifically designed to work with Tbird - don't know of an AV program that is. They will still check any incoming and outgoing files though, so you can use any AV program and not have to worry. :)

Ryan,
I don't know what AV means. Do you mean that it will check each email that comes in and out but just won't have a signature at the bottome of them?
Am I understanding that I can redownload Thunderbird and still use AVG with it?
Thanks for your help,

Moxie#1, you have to point it to "AVGSE.exe" in your AVG folder, I use Thunderbird and it works fine for me. You do this on the pg where it asks for an antivirus prgm[AV], just browse to your AVG folder & click on "AVGSE.exe"

According to the TB FAQ page:
Is Thunderbird susceptible to e-mail viruses?
Thunderbird will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.
JavaScript is switched off by default for mail and news, so an e-mail cannot run script code just by being opened.
As with any mail program, take proper caution before running any file that you receive in e-mail. Appropriate anti-virus software should also help keep you safer.
That said AVG does have a Email scanner extension or plug in or whatever that can supposedly be configured to run with TB. Check your Control Center for your AVG and see if you have a tab for "E-mail Scanner" and one for "Mail Proxy". If not you can download the plug-in from http://www.grisoft.cz/beta/avgemc/avgemc_en.htm
Now there is a long set of directions on how to configure it to work with TB which can be posted here if anyone is interested. Unfortunately I can not vouch for this as it is beyond my expertise.

This is probably unnecessary... Unless you can't live with that signature at the bottom of your emails (which I don't put much faith in as they're easily spoofed), there's no point in using the email plugin.
With Tbird, you don't have to worry about attachments executing themselves and installing viruses without your knowledge... Tbird won't open an attachment unless you tell it to, and AVG will catch it if it's a virus when you open it, so you won't get infected. :)

Thanks so much Ryan....I'll continue to try Thunderbird.......I tried what was explained in the post before yours and it was over my head. I will take your understanding and not worry about it. Thank you , Everyone who helped with this post,

Thanks Ryan. If something does get past guess who will be asked for help cleaning it off? :D
Do not feel bad Moxie the rest of the directions got even more complicated. I posted it because I never did figure it out and thought some one else might. That information came from the TB boards which are way too advanced for me. (And not nearly as friendly as the people here.) Since the TB directions and Ryan agree that we are realtively safe, I for one will not be concerned with it anymore.
