HI everybody..
I find that I do not know how to change the image file size (I think it is measured in KB).
I can make the picture bigger, but sometimes when I want to post something here (such as wallpaper) the file size is too big.
I have Irfanview which is supposed to make it easy to change these things, but I guess I do not know how to work it.
I am going to try to include a thumbnail to demonstarate what I see in Irfanview, but the file size may be too big..
Well, it won't work - again because the file is too big - I can post it by making the image smaller, but then you will not be able to read the screenshot!
Help please all you image savvy people!!

What format are you saving the files as? BMP, JPG?

Thank you Bruce and Lonnie,
Bruce, I probably want to save them as JPEG.
Lonnie, I guess I did not make myself clear in my first post, and for that I apologize. I was wondering if there was a way to decrease the file size without compromising the actual image measurements. I would like people to be able to read the screen shots I post (even if there is a decrease in color quality), and so far they have not been readable! By the way, I did save that site you posted. It is good!!
:( :( :(
Thanks,
Elly

or is this not what you are talking about?

Lonnie, I think I might get it. I still have questions about actual file size however. I am going to try and post two thumbnails. One is a cropped screenshot of a larger image and one has been resized. I wonder if you can tell me what these figures mean. Is one of them the actual file size?
I got this info by going to Image>Information in Irfanview..
Thanks,
Elly

ok...here's the 'info' from my scrnshot...just like the 'info' from yours...my 2nd scrnshot for this 'info' is still changed to 80%...what was yours done with?
As to file size (KB,etc.), I don't know anything about that...just that I always change the scrnshot to 80%...cuz otherwise most Forums won't accept 800x600, etc. (website limitations for whatever Forums site is using whatever program for the Forums (vBulletin, etc.)
Elly, I'm no expert at this stuff...heck, I can't even figure out how to scan stuff into My Documents... :D ...I was told to use 80% way back in 2000 and never asked why :p ...but it has always worked for me...and I am all thumbs when it comes to this stuff :D

Elly,
Further to what Lonnie has explained, you can reduce the kilobyte size say without reducing the physical size in irfanview.
Obviously in the forum you must meet certain rules about size, that being physical size and kilobyte size.
When you have the picture in infanview and you wan't to retain the physical size, just go to File/Save As and when that window opens make sure your picture is in jpg and you will notice another window usually to the right saying options. In there you can achieve about a 30% reduction by moving the slider down from 100% to say 50% but no lower or you will lose to much clarity.
To reduce the file even further and this can be done all at once with the above slider operation, just untick the three boxes below the slider. Then click save and you will have achieved about a 75% reduction.
You must realise though, that you are loosing quality, so you don't use this method to reduce files that you may wan't to keep but ok for use say on the forum.
I'll try and get a couple of screenshots with this post to further explain this operation.

:) Hello Miss Elly, if you go to this Microsoft page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
one of the Power Toys for XP for download is an image resizer which allows you to resize any picture or group of pictures by right clicking it and choosing Resize Image. You do not loose you original larger file. It gives you a choice of 4 predefined sizes or you can do a custom resize. I use it all the time.
Image Resizer
This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.
There are lots of other goodies there too including a Taskbar Magnifier (for magnifying any part of the screen) and a Virtual desktop Manager which allows you to have up to 4 desktops.
