I was going to name this thread "Alex's Weekly Tweaks" but didnt, due to the lack or originality! :)

From now on until I run out of tweaks, my computer messes up, or I get kicked off the forum I will try to give a tweak that I have tried out and like, every week or so.....

The tweaks will be for all windows based OS. If it is only for a certain OS I will let you know.

These will include; Registry Hacks, Basic Computer Tweaking, Shell Hacks, Window Tips/Tricks, Secrets, Bug Fixes, Easter Eggs, and more.

Most of these tips will be taken of the net, some might even be my own. :D

Note that will work for me might not work for you, that being stated....TRY THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Well shall we begin.....?

Windows 98

This tweak allows you to change the brown briefcase to a cool looking metal one.

Start by opening regedit. Look for

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

Double-click on the right hand pane "Default" value. This should show "syncui.dll,0".change it to "syncui.dll,1" (without the quotes)

The "1" addedinstead of the "0" makes the other file (aliminum) come up as the briefcase.

Close Regedit and press F5 on the Desktop to refresh when done."

Check back Regilarly for more tips and tweaks :)

REMEMBER, Before making any changes in the Registry, to Back it Up FIRST!!!

Oops seems like I did leave that out Bruce. Thanks for the reminder.

And It is very Vital that you back up the whole registry into a floppy or a safe place (another partition). To do so simply go to file->export-> and save as anything you want to name it.

Thanks again Bruce.

My registry backup would not fit on a floppy. It is over 7MB, is that normal?

Everything works fine, so I guess I won't worry too much about it...

I am not sure LeRoi, if it works fine I would leave it alone.

Since I do a lot of tweaking, I have mine on a floppy (1.2 MB), incase something goes terribly wrong :)

But everything seems to work for you so I would not worry about it either.

LeRoi, just had a look at my Reg Backup and it is 6.5MB so yours seems normal. I use a prog called ERUNT and then burn it to a cd, as I don't have a partitioned HD. There is also reg optimiser available from the same place called NTRegopt. They work with NT,2000, and XP.
If anyone is interested look at http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/

Thanks Eve,

That's reassuring. ;)

I think the size of the registry will depend on the amount of stuff that has been in an out of your computer. Installed programs usually leave a registry entry, this entry is obviously not removed by the uninstaller....why...i don't know.

But I don't install much stuff on my computer anymore, so I think that is why mine is only 1.2 MB not to mention I have only had this installation of Windows for a few weeks now, not a few years like you LeRoi :)
