I am asking this for a friend who is a complete computer dummy. My 5& 1/2 year old grandson knows more than he does.

This is the question. He is running Win98SE with dial up access. He is using NAV and I asked him about getting timely updates. His answer was "Huh". I then suggested he use AVG as you always know when you are getting an update. Can he have both NAV and AVG running at the same time?

Thanks in advance and more to come to all responders.

Hi MisterHy, :)

Symantec (Norton) recommends against having any other antivirus installed on the same system at the same time as Norton antivirus.

It is possible to set Norton to automatically check for updates, but I update manually and don't know the exact procedure for configuring it to check automatically, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

In fact I bet Amie is writing a response right now telling us how to do it, LOL. :thRt:

Hy,

No.

You will not gain any additional protection. Furthermore, the presence of two different anti-virus programs on the same computer can sometimes cause conflicts that could jeopardize the protective capabilities of the software. The use of two different anti-virus programs may also cause significant slowdowns.

You can have more than one AV program but you would not want more than one to run as your real time AV monitor. I would not recommend mixing AV programs though. It would be better to update the Norton AV and set it up to automatically update and to show them how to do a LiveUpdate manually. Also give them the link to My PcClinic so they can get help if and when they need it. :)

Hy,

In a word...NO! While you can have more than one AV program installed, you can ONLY have ONE active and running at any one time. They tend to get in each other's way and make a complete mess of things.

I thank all my very smart friends for the answers. What would I do without you all? I would sit at my keyboard and mess up my PC, that's what I would do. A long time ago, I used to teach Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. The first thing I told my new students is that there are NO STUPID QUESTIONS. If you have a question, ask. Chances are the whole class has the same thing in mind. After the first class, no more lectures. Everything was question and answer and made for great, highly informative classes.

You are most welcome, Hy, :) although I don't consider myself very smart, LOL. :D

You are right about there being no stupid questions, I think.

The only possible ones, are the ones that go unasked.
