Just thought I would drop a note and let people know I have found a small flaw in the Microsoft Service Pack 2 (Beta). I and a few of my friends have been running it for a few weeks now and found that if a Microsoft error comes up and asks you to send or do not send a report to Microsoft, people that are running O.E.M versions are not able to download updates if they report the error. For some reason Microsoft is not recognizing O.E.M versions of Windows. In the event a Microsoft error comes up click on "Do Not Send". Daniel

are you not running the final version of SP2 yet?

No GolfProRM, Ive just been doing updates as they become available and my system seems to be working fine. As a note I got my SP2 disk from a Microsoft rep. The cd is massive and I feel sorry for anyone who has to download it from the net. According to the properties of the disk it is 500 MB. Daniel

I downloaded the full network install version from MS and it is not that large. It is only about 272 MB's. It only took about 15 minutes to download over a cable connection.

You lucky Ranger Bob, Im on dialup, 24,600 bps and I download approximately 1 mb every 20 to 30 minutes. As far as the cd I have Im curious to find out why it shows up 500 MB?

Probably because they added a bunch of extra junk, and didn't compress anything...

Gee thanks Randy, Unfortunately where I am the lines are the old copper type. The last time I did a download of SP1 it took 4 hours and 20 minutes. SP2 would likely take a week. Oh well when it comes to a choice of rural living or high speed I will take the rural life, the animals dont send trojans and such, they dont delete me and most of they dont argue online.

The current Techsupport's SupportAlert Newsletter says that Polar Bear's not getting and installing SP2 is the best option for people who have kept up with patches and updates and who have a firewall. The editor does say that everyone should get SP2 on CDROM ("as many copies as Microsoft will send you") and give them to friends, neighbors, and anyone else who may not have kept up-to-date with patches; the rationale is that the fewer unprotected computers around, the fewer bad things in general internet circulation. He also says that SP2 is necessary for people who have not installed patches and for people with brand new computers.

It is my understanding the the pre-releases should be uninstalled before installing the final release.

I don't believe that is an option. I believe you either have to recover the PC with a backup taken before SP2 was installed or use the express install of SP2.

Then I have faulty memory and it was the Beta releases that had to be uninstalled. In any event I would look for the possibility of uninstall first before proceeding with the SP2 install.

As regards the large download problem for dial up users I do know that over here in England that some pc mags are including the full program on a free cd. One of mine is doing so in the next issue. PC Advisor if I remember correctly. But you would not have this problem if you had not upgraded to XP!
I still run a Pentium II 4oomhz ME system over 5 1/2 years old and it performs very well. It does all my music cd's and video cd's and image editing with PSP without any complaints. I have over 300 programs and they all run well, so why upgrade? I don't know a reason to. Xp has certainly had its problems no matter what people say!

Are you running the beta or the final version of SP2? If you're running the final version, you're fine :)
