Re Win98se When my old 300W power supply died, it took out my v92 modem, so I got another one, installed it, etc. I had been using a dialer that also re-dials anytime the connection fails, and since I've had the new power supply (450W) I've not been disconnected. I thought I could not-use the dialer and have one less thing running, but... When I used just the Windows connect-to-the-internet, my best connection speed was 41K. I've since resumed using the dialer, because it connects at a faster speed, and I can tell it to connect at a minimum speed, which I've set to 45K and I usually connect at 46.7K. Now, I am wondering why the regular Windows connection-maker cannot connect at higher than 41K, when clearly the modem can. Is this something peculiar to W98se? (To set up that connection, I went to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > setup tab; then I made a shortcut the target of which was a .dun file Windows put in my root C: directory.) Anyone have any ideas?
:hmm:
Re XP modem installations! I had gone to the modem's mfgr's site (BestData.com) to look for new drivers and saw something very interesting. BestData has a special XP driver, because if you use the regular modem driver that XP uses when it detects and installs your v.92|v.44 modem, your modem will behave like a v.90 (noticeably slower connection speed; I don't know if the modem will also behave like a pre-v.44 with not-so-great data compression but I suspect so). So, if you have XP and a newer v.92|v.44 modem, you may want to check for drivers that are better than the ones that come with XP....
