Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of astronomy, biology and geology, which considers the question of whether extraterrestrial life exists and if so, then what are its origin, distribution, and evolution. It comes from the Greek words astron = star, bios = life and logos = word/science), and is also known as exobiology (Greek: exo = out) or xenobiology (Greek: xenos = foreign).

morgrafied

I'm sorry, I couldn't find a definition of this word; in a way. But I am also interested.

I think etymologists(?) study the origins of words sometimes in an approach very similar to anthropology...
they study the origins of the people who use the words, to better understand the origins of the word.

We used this word in our childhood... "war" games... "role-playing" is what it is called now, I think.
The poor half-sister of King Arthur went slightly crazy and successfully evil. Her name is Morgan, I think... and her son might be Mordred?

When we played Robin Hood, or King Arthur, and somebody snuck up on you and scared the p
erson next to you; you would say something like, "... ok, maybe you scared me, but I'm gonna transmorgrafy you!"

And you would mean that they would be scared beyond scared....

Just like the darn realization that not only are you in deep
peril but it is all your fault in some weird way... like Arthur realizing who Mordred's father is when he gets challenged...

Heavy stuff for kids, huh? But not really... as adults we tend to forget that kids can be very subtle... we knew exactly what Morgan+mortify= transmorgrafied meant.

Now, I'm going to be transmorgrafied if all my writing didn't spark an agreement of a remembrance of something similar back in your memory...
but instead of being bad like Morgan...

it could also be used as a superlative in a positive way... You hit the winning home run and you were transmorgrafied when your girl saw it...

It can mean that something darn good couldn't have happened any darn better.

So. I hope that little spin was fun.

If anybody remembers using "transmorgrafy" as described above, let's pool our memories and see if we can submit it to some mugwump somewhere who will get it entered as a "slang" word in a new dictionary... or archaic word! :cjlol:

Eve
09-18-2005, 02:05 AM
I was often threatened with "transmogrification" by my mother, which I assumed was similar to 'I'll burst you". She never did either :)

Transmogrify = reverse, metamorphose,transfigure.

Edit - you must learn to know your "A" from your "I" :cjlol:

Aotearoa

Clouds seen from the sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aotearoa)

Perhaps the most likely explanation for the name is derived from seafaring. The first sign of any land from a boat is often cloud in the sky above the island. New Zealand's mountain ranges are longer and higher than elsewhere in the South Pacific and so they are particularly good at generating standing waves. The resulting long lenticular clouds are very different from the more usual cumulus clouds seen elsewhere in the region. The sight of these clouds over either of the country's two main islands could easily have led to this name

Way cool, Eve! A gorgeous horizon to look for, for sure.

The alphabet is more like a suggestion than an outright rule, correct?

I mean, it is like a strike zone, right? A matter of opinion based on who is in the best position to call it, or call it loudly?

Wouldn't that be cool in a twilight zone kind of way, if you woke up one morning and "G" was third letter, like in Greek. That was the only change that you could notice in the world.... just a thought for october...

Right now I'm looking for #5718½. Maybe someone else can
