I use AOL and i have had very few problems up till now.
I Can connect no trouble to AOL and view webpages and download files, but programs like msn messenger cant connect at all. I have tried two of my online games and neither of them can connect to the zonematch or ESO servers.
The problem started since we had a power cut and the computer wasn't shut down properley, it was connected to the internet at the time.
When i try connect with MSN 6 it suggests that im behind a firewall and that the proxy settings are missing or incorrect, i do not have a firewall installed at the moment.
also the first time i tried to use internet explorer it tried to download very page i visited but has stopped now.
from when this first started i tried a system restore to the day before the powercut and still got the same error. then i tried reinstalling my modem drivers with still no luck, then i reinstalled both AOL and my modem drivers and the problem still persists.
i am running a 2ghz pentium 4 processor, with 256MB RAM, 40GB hard drive and a GeForce 4 MX420 im running AOL 7.0 at the moment.
if you can help i will be very gratefull thanks

Hi juiced
Welcome to MPC
Although I haven't used AOL since the very first version and don't know much about it,you didn't say what version of windows your using,it sounds to me,like your dial up adapter,or AOL adapter,TCP/IP stack is not set properly and therefore can't connect,if you tell me what operating system your using I might be able to help you.

It looks like you are running Windows XP so have tried a System Recovery to see if that fixes the problem? You would need to recovery to a point before this happened.

I'm using Windows Xp pro sixpac, i have tried a system restore to an earlier time an it seems to have done nothing to help the problem.
does this mean that the problem is with hardware :(

I was going to tell you to uninstall AOL and to blow your TCP/IP stack,it's a lot of work because AOL does over 200 registry changes to your computer.
I suggest trying this first
In Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system; therefore, it is not possible to uninstall TCP/IP in Windows XP. However, the TCP/IP stack can be reset to the state when the OS was first installed.
Go to Start Menu -> RUN
Type "command" click OK
In the new window that pops up type this "NETSH INTERFACE IP RESET LOG.TXT" (less quotes), then press enter.
Reboot.
This might or might not solve your connection problems,if this don't work I suggest a clean install, since it was not shut down properly you may never know what files got corrupt in the process, you may wait and listen to what others have to say

Six pac and ranger thanks for the help i have yet to try what you recommened sixpac.
i recently discovered this problems are limited to only one account on my XP i logged onto a another account and it worked fine.
Does this means its something to do with the settings on the problem account?

It is possible that the profile is corrupt on the account that you are having problems with. Is it the actual Administrator account or another account? If it is another account then create another account with the Administrator account and then remove this one.

Done and dusted and the new account works absolutely fine, Thanks ranger and six pac although it works i kind of do want to find out what caused it so i can prevent it happening again so ill have a look around.
I haven't tried six pacs method yet but if it happens again i will give it a try but i don't want to try fix a problem that isn't showing itself yet.
Thanks loads guys.

Sounds like your account profile was corrupt from the bad shut down. About the only thing you can do to prevent that is to make sure your system is on a UPS.

There was a recent problem with AOL connecting to MSN. Let me look around to see if I can find the news story.
OK. Here we go. http://news.com.com/2009-1025-5071192.html
