View Full Version : Problem On Booting Up

I have an old 300 Pent. with Windows 98se and McAfee 5.21. Sometimes while it is booting it will hang for a long time, say a minute, when it does the scan for viruses in the McAfee's autoexec line. It will not do this all the time. Is this something to be concerned about?

It has done this before I formatted the hard drive. Then after some days have past it resumes the same routine. I've done everything from hard disk scans, to going over the start-up list, to unfrag. Any ideas?

Welcome Drifter, :)

All I can tell you about McAfee is that when I uninstalled McAfee and installed Norton my pc acted like a different and much better computer.

AVG antivirus is free and I can get you a link to grisoft.com, but wait till you completely uninstall McAfee before installing a different anti-virus program. There are different methods for different versions (all tedious). I think I can find the instructions for yours, if you choose to switch.

I have never used AVG, but I feel sure it will get along with your computer better than what you have and will be adequate untill you either choose to stay with it or switch, the uninstall for AVG is much easier if you choose to change (from what I have read).

Here are McAfee uninstall instructions:

Here is where to get AVG free edition:

You might want to wait for other opinions.

LeRoi,

Thanks, I'll give it a try. If nothing else, I can always revert and go back to McAfee if for some reason I don't like AVG antivirus. I doubt it. I'm not much of a big fan of McAfee either.

BTW I know you said, You might want to wait for other opinions. Your's looks to be the only one. Thanks again. I appreciate it.

Drifter,

I think no-one else joined in as we agree with LeRoi, the best thing you can do is get rid of McAfee, and he had that pretty well covered.

We are all still here if you need further help.

You don't have a NIC (network card) in the machine do you ?

It now has a nic in it. But this machine was having this same problem(?) before the nic.
