Hello everyone how have you been? When the company I worked for folded I came into possesion of a Dell re-instulation disk, We had leased Dell PC's. I would like to know if there is a way to install this on a non Dell machine. I have had no luck in doing same. Second for you non Mricrosoft fans out there is ther a good alternitive Windows Office. I have seen several on Ebay but am unsure on which would be best.

I don't use this.So I can't verify it's effectiveness,but I've been hearing about this software a lot:

Sorry but Dell recovery disks are for Dell systems only. They are configured at the factory with Dell features matching the programs on the disk. Same with HP, Sony, etc.

I have heard that Sun's Star Office is also a very good (free)MS alternative. You can read about it HERE (http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,17699,00.asp)

There is also a free edition of 602PC Suite
602PC SUITE is an integrated office suite compatible with Microsoft Office documents (DOC/XLS) designed for computers running Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003.
The suite is composed of four full-featured applications: a word processor, spreadsheet, photo editor and digital photo organizer.

If you want a decent, FREE office suite. Try OpenOffice. It's pretty decent for the money :)

Never used MS Office, used Wordperfect instead. Openoffice is a great replacement for Office. You can open Office type files also. The 602 suite is good, just not as extensive as Openoffice.

Is it possible for me to make a Dell recovery Disk? My new Dell has none provided. Nor is a Win XP disk provided. I guess I am to use "Sytem Restore", but I sure would like to have a recovery disk. Leewill

Contact Dell and ask them for it. With a new system you should be able to get at least that level of support :)

I just did this over the weekend. Look in Start--Programs--Dell Accessories for both a system recovery disk creator and a windows XP disk creator. The whole kit and kaboodle took less than an hour to create 7 cds.

To my understanding it's not possible as of now. I also came across this post at another forum and was intrigued. I never use Dell, though I have recommended it to 2 family members for the 24-7 support options. But maybe I won't support Dell after reading this:

FYI

Just received a Dell 600m and did not get a Windows XP disk. Sooooooooo
I called support and was told this is Dells new policy, the operating system
is on a hidden partition on the hard drive. Well after a smooth discussion with the rep he agreed to send me one. I explained what happens if my Hard drive crashes after my warranty has expired. He said, I would have to purchase a new hard drive from Dell and it would come with XP on the hidden partition. Yea I could see me making that argument 3 years down the road, well you rep told me...........sorry sir he was wrong and you must
purchase not only a new drive but another copy of XP. Well just call me
paranoid but it all ended well as I will get my disk. It only took 30
minutes to resolve the issue. BTW it could also have been me saying that it was unacceptable and I will send this machine back tomorrow.
The moral to this story is, if you don't ask they don't offer.

I hope this may help someone in the future.
Not sure if it's true, just something to possibly confirm with the Dell rep if anyone plans on ordering.
