There is this new (with XP) icon with a red "x" in my systray: "Local Area Connection. A network cable is unplugged." As far as I know, I don't have any local area connection cable because I'm not on a network (and I don't have an ethernet card). But maybe I need to do something? Does anyone know what?

Go to your "Network Connections Folder" (click Start, point to Settings, and then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections or you can right-click My Network Places on the desktop and then click Properties), then right click the "Local Area Connection" and select "Disable".

D_Spider,
Most newer computers come with a network card installed, some built into the motherboard. If there is no cable connected then XP tells you that a cable is unplugged. Simply follow Amie's advice and disable it. You 're not using it anyway.

Thanks, Amie & John! Installing my old programs and transferring data from the backup discs, I suddenly had an appreciation for (a) all those IT people who do this all the time on other people's computers and (b) the people who wrote Windows so that the OS will [?!] work on everyone's at-work computer. But they're not as altruistic as you!
