View Full Version : Good News about homemade CD-R labels

I finally got the information from 3M. The solvent used in the 3M Scotch Glue Stick (permanent adhesive, "not toxic," the "Rubs on Purple, Dries Clear!" kind) is water. (Remember the thread the followed the news that adhesive-solvents are dangerous to CD media?) So, if you want to make labels for your CDs that won't eat into the top layer of the laminate the way most commercial adhesives and even some felt-tip markers do, now you know what to use.
3M makes no claim about how well the paper sticks to the plastic (?) laminate (the Glue Stick is for paper-to-paper), but I have a bunch of labels that have stuck on for more than a year, and in this high-desert, low-humidity environment, that's pretty good.

D_Spider,
Thanks for that info. I have wondered what they use to stick those labels on. They cost so much to buy I have been using a felt tip pen. I will have to try that glue.

D_Spider,
How do you cut the paper circle and the hole?? I am not that good with a pair of sissors, look jagged, etc. Is there a better method than sissors??

John, c'mon, you can do it-- just don't try cutting after you've done strenuous things with your hands (volleyball, using pliers, probably knitting, too). You are using printed-on-the-paper circles, right? Then use a sharp scissors (from the Dollar Tree store?) and don't worry-- I made some jaggies yesterday and then looked again and couldn't see the place! With the tiny little circle, I punch through and make a medium hole, and then to cut the circle, I stick the scissors in from underneath: can see the line and the scissors-blade better that way.
Now, if your home workshop is really, really well-equipped, you could use a hollow punch. I've never seen one that big, though.

You could always use a small craft knife.

Another way to go (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3600676&cat=3955&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3964%3A163385%3A3955%3A4457).
Just don't buy it from Walmart--they're evil. Also note, though the writer is not expensive dual-layer dvds are astronomically priced.

Solution: Don't buy them then! LOL!

D_Spider,
What I thought (and dreaded) in your answer, sissors. Oh, Well I will give it a try again.
Use Nero to print the labels and it gives a dotted line to cut on.
I have seen the HP Printer and it is nice, just can't justify buying it for one or two disks a month.
Thanks all,
John

That was kind of the point...not to go gung-ho on a dual layer writer just for that purpose. Buy it for the DVD single writing and near silkscreening label making abilities. http://www.mypcclinic.com/forums/images/smilies/67.gif
