The TweakUI for XP has this non-gimmicky tweak for using your "multimedia keyboard" functionality (the special buttons for "Web," "Search," "Email," etc.) without having the special keyboard driver installed (i.e., one more installed-and-always-running-from-startup process avoided). On my most recent re-install of everything, I just didn't bother with the keyboard driver because it makes those buttons use only Microsoft things, like Internet Explorer but not any other browser... and then I came across this in TweakUI, to get the keyboard buttons to work the way one really wants them to.

From the Tweak UI main dialog window, choose Explorer and then Command Keys. That gives you a list of all the possible command keys that MS knew about when XP came out. Select a key ('WebHome' is on the list; my keyboard has a 'WWW' button) and click the "Change" button. Then choose the changed Action you want (Perform the default action, or Do nothing, or Run a program). The last option makes the type-in-the-box space active.

The surest way to get the change you want is to type in C:\ and let the program auto-complete as much as it can, then type in P (to get the auto-complete to show "Program Files" as one option), then type in \ to get more auto-complete options, etc., till you've got the program you want to start in the form-box.

will work the way you chose for it.]

Then click OK, Apply, and OK to see if the button works, or if you're trusting click OK, Apply, and then change another button from the list.

(TweakUI is at the Microsoft download site.)

Shame my old version of TweakUI does not have this feature on 98SE, it would cut down my start up programs from 5 to 4.
