Thanks to any answers in advance. I have to thank you in advance otherwise I might forget to do it. That is a big problem when you get older.

This is the problem. When I click on the desktop icon for IE, I get a flash of my home page and dropped off immediately. I am also using Outlook Express for my e-mail. I get the mail ok and can send mail but if there is a hyperlink to click, I am going nowhere.

How did he get to this site you may ask. I am running WINXP home and utilize the system restore feature. I get one and only one IE working. If I drop off accidentally, I can not get IE to work. I have to do a system restore again.

I have an always on cable connection and there are internet programs I can get by just clicking the desktop icon. Programs such as The weather channel. Just click and I am there. It is only IE I am unable to get in the normal manner.

I have a Compaq Presario running WINXP home edition. Hi speed cable connection. I know there have been several IE problems posted and all seem to say to click on repair on the add/remove list. You also need the WinXP disc to do this. I have two problems with this.

Problem #1: There is NO repair setting on my add/remove list.

Problem #2: I do not have an XP disc. Compaq only put in a recovery disc and I am not sure what this has on it. I do not know if the OS is on it or not.

Any help will be greatly appreciated by me. Again, thank you in advance.

I don't have XP so can't help there. If you go to Add/Remove and select IE to uninstall, you will get a popup to Add a component, Repair or Restore to a prevous version.. Select the repair option.

Unfortunately you can not Repair IE 6 in XP the same way as you can in the other versions of Windows. If you would like to try a repair here is a link to the MSKB on how to do it:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;Q318378

Do you have any other browsers installed to see if it is actually an IE problem and not a connection problem? You could install Mozilla to see if you connect with it if you don't already have it installed.

PJ and Ranger Bob, I thank you both your responses to my problem. Bob,I have just downloaded Mozilla 1.4 and installed it. Works like a charm. a couple of questions about Mozilla. 1: Why did it read "Netscape" when I first opened it up? 2: And most important. Can I get my favorite list from IE? I have a awful lot of them and it would be a monster job to transfer them one at a time. I looked at the Microsoft page you referred me to and I don't think I have enough knowledge to play with the registry. The first fix needs the XP cd which I do not have.

I guess I will make LeRoi happyy when I tell him I am using Mozilla.

I don't know how this was done, but I clicked on "Bookmarks" on the top tool bar and all my favorites are here. I guess that answers my question #2.

Let me ask another question. I have been using an IE spellcheck which I find very valuable as it tends to keep me honest in my spelling. Is there a spell check for Mozilla? If there is, how would I find it and install it?

Thanks again to both of you

Hi Misterhy,

I have never used the Mozilla spellchecker, but it is available here:

http://spellchecker.mozdev.org/installatio...html#mozilla1.4 (http://spellchecker.mozdev.org/installation.html#mozilla1.4)

Be sure and get the Windows version and the one for your version of Mozilla. I think you need to click the install link, not download (close and reopen Moz after installation). It should then appear in your composer and mail programs' file or edit menu (I think)). As I have never installed it, I don't know if it works with the browser while typing at forums and the like. I will try to find more info.

LeRoi,I downloaded the spellchecker twice and I can not find it any where. The IE spellchecker was on my right click menu and was very convenient. The web site is not very informative about it either.

I guess I will post it on the chat tonight.

Thanks

Hi all. I just posted this on WS as I had asked the question there also. Let me do a paste and you will see what is what.

First, let me thank everyone who offered help and support one more time. Second, I FOUND THE TROUBLE AND FIXED IT. I know it is not polite to shout but when I type in the answer you will see why I was shouting.

Are you ready for this? I still am shaking my head in disbelief.

I HAD been using a pop up stopper called POW by Analog x. If I remember correctly it was a Kim Komando recommend. Any way the stopper decided that Internet Explorer was a PopUp and stopped it. I do not know why. I checked the list and IE was not on it. (List of stopped entities to be stopped). I did some experimenting and proved to my satisfaction that this is and was the culprit. It no longer appears on my PC.

In all my years as a Telephone Company Central Office technician I had many strange troubles to work on and clear. Part of my qualifications for the job was being able to think logically/Illogical. It does not make sense I know, but this was very necessary in the clearing of Telephone troubles. Example: all the signs point to a problem outside the office (line side) and was really behind right in your own equipment. (drop side)

If anyone has any thoughts about the pop up stopper, chime in. A good trouble to remember as it may happen to other people.

Again, I thank everyone.

Hi Hy,

Glad you figured out the trouble; that is certainly one for the books. I think you should contact the author of the program and tell him about your troubles and see what he says. I contacted him once about one of his other programs and he was very helpful and polite with me. I had just begun with a pc at that time and appreciated his down-to-earth manner.

I will try to remember this for future problems, probably should be one of the first questions if I/we run across this problem again.

Thanks for letting us know. :thRt:

Ahh... the benefits of running Mozilla :) It's got a built-in pop-up stopper that works as well(if not better) than any program I've seen. Besides, no worries that it'll block the program as a popup. :thRt:
