I keep getting this error. I have repaired IE to no end, but it's not helping. The current version I have of this OLEAUT32.DLL is 2.40.4518, that's in the Windows\System Folder. I do have another version showing in my temp file as 2.40.4277 in a folder called pft8005~Temp\Reader.

Any suggestions?

What version of IE are you running? If it is IE 6 can you drop back by uninstalling IE to see if it corrects the problem?

Do you mean return to my previous version, thats stated in the options of IE6? Since I upgraded to 6 from 5.5, will that be the one that is returned?

I am using 98SE.

If you go to your Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and select Microsoft Internet Explorer then click Remove, you will be given 3 options one of which is Restore the previous Windows configuration. This will take you back to version 5.5 if that is what you had before you upgraded to 6.0

Question? Should I just try another browser, like Mozilla?

If you would like to install another browser, before attempting to return IE to 5.5, then have a look at this recent thread with some recommendations;

I don't believe you will be able to do MS Windows Updates without IE so I think you are going to have to get it working no matter what you decide to do about using another browser.

If you get it working by reverting back to IE 5.5 then you can update to IE6 again which would be a fresh install and should not have your previous problem.

Hi,

Try reverting to a prior version of IE, then re-upgrade as RB suggests.

If that doesn't work we'll try something else. You will need IE for Windows Update and it would be best to have it functioning properly before you install other browsers, unless it is intolerably error prone.

Mozilla is an excellent browser, but I think it would be best to get IE working right before installing it.

Have you tried running System File Checker? I never used Win98 so I can't tell you how it is done, but I feel sure someone here can.

I haven't run it lately.

It's funny...today I haven't gotten the message once. What gives?

Hard to say, that's a weird error.

Why don't you go here:

and see if any malware is detected.

I did...and I used Ad-aware to delete it. Let's see if it helps! Thanks!
